    A guide to the Winter Refresh and how it affects special cards

    The winter ratings refresh occurs each FIFA in mid to late February after the winter transfer window is concluded. EA releases new non-in-forms (NIFs) for players who changed clubs as well as those whose performance during the 2019-20 season merits a higher rated card than the one they received at the beginning of FIFA 20. This is important because under certain conditions the new winter NIFs can trigger an upgrade of all that player's earned special cards as well as Player of the Month and FUTmas cards.

    Is Player X going to get upgraded and by how much?

    Sofifa tracks the current ratings for real life players in game modes outside of FIFA Ultimate Team, as those are adjusted much more frequently and may change at any time. Typically the face rating, weak foot, and skill move ratings listed on Sofifa are what EA uses for the winter refresh, but note that upgrades may only be temporary and not last until the winter refresh. For instance, in FIFA 19 EA released a Premium SBC for Marek Hamsik which had three star skills but in other modes he had been upgraded to five star skills, so a lot of people did the SBC expecting him to be upgraded to five star skills in the winter refresh, but in January his skill rating outside FUT was reverted back to three and therefore the winter refresh in February did not change his special cards.

    Will the winter NIF trigger an upgrade of that player's special cards?

    EA may change things for FIFA 20, but how it worked in previous years is that if the new winter NIF equals or surpasses that player's face rating or one of the face stats then all of that player's special cards (except Scream due to its unique upgrades) will be increased by the difference in face rating between the summer NIF and the winter NIF. For instance, last FUTmas Lucas Torreira received an 82 rated card, which was four points higher than his 78 rated summer NIF. During the winter refresh he received a winter NIF with a face rating of 82, which triggered an upgrade of the FUTmas card. It increased by +4 to become 86 rated because his winter NIF was 4 points higher than his summer NIF.

    Some other examples include Alexandre Lacazette, whose special cards in FIFA 19 received an upgrade because his 85 winter NIF had 83 pace and 74 physicality, equaling the 83 pace and 74 physicality of his 86 rated in-form, triggering an upgrade for his special cards. Andy Robertson's 83 winter NIF had 76 physicality, which matched the 76 physicality on his 84 in-form, triggering an upgrade. Marcus Rashford's 82 winter NIF had 93 pace and 42 defending, matching the 93 pace and the 42 defending on his 84 in-form and triggering an upgrade.

    Unfortunately not every player who receives a better winter NIF sees enough of an increase to trigger an upgrade of their special cards. Lucas Digne's 81 winter NIF was one point lower in face rating than his 82 IF and was also at least one point lower in each of the face stats, preventing him from triggering an upgrade. Also, Heung Min Son's 85 winter NIF remained one point lower in face rating than his 86 IF and at least one point lower in each of the face stats, therefore he did not get upgraded. That example is particularly important and controversial because Son's winter 85 NIF had the exact same face rating in defending and physicality as his 84 summer NIF despite the one point overall increase in face rating. Note that the 85 winter NIF did equal the 86 IF in six different in-game stats (interceptions, etc.) but it did not equal the IF in any of the face stats, therefore it did not upgrade. Only the face rating and the face stats matter for the winter refresh upgrade formula. But if Son's 85 winter NIF had increased by one point in either defending or physicality then all of his special cards would have been upgraded, therefore it appeared that EA deliberately kept his 85 winter NIF just low enough to prevent triggering an upgrade.

    Does EA ever screw up winter upgrades?

    Yes, but rarely. Last year João Cancelo received an 83 rated winter NIF, which was an increase of two over his summer NIF, but was one point lower in face rating than his first in-form and at least one point lower in each of the face stats. Therefore his special cards should not have been upgraded but for some reason it happened anyway and all of his special cards increased by the two point face rating difference between his summer NIF and his winter NIF. As far as I know, that's the only example of an unearned winter upgrade in FIFA 19.

    Do Team of the Year Nominee cards trigger an upgrade?

    No. The only cards that matter for triggering an upgrade are the winter NIF and the first earned special card (or FUTmas). Heung Min Son had an 85 rated UCL card last year when they were all +1 over the NIF and it increased to 86 rated, but that did not cause his special cards to increase even though it equaled his 86 rated IF. Only the winter NIF matters. That being said, it is likely that TOTY Nominee cards will increase if that player receives a winter refresh increase even if they don't trigger an upgrade of the other special cards, as that is what happened with UCL cards last year. UCL cards in FIFA 20 also might automatically increase to equal the new winter NIF, but none of us knows for sure.

    So what does all this mean?

    Timo Werner is having a fantastic season at RB Leipzig, having already earned two in-forms and Player of the Month for November while also being a candidate for Player of the Month in December. Despite that, until this week he had only been increased to an 84 rating on Sofifa, which may or may not have triggered an upgrade of his special cards in FIFA 20 depending upon what face stats EA gave to a theoretical 84 rated winter NIF. Fortunately, he has recently been increased again to 85 rated on Sofifa. If he holds that rating then all of his special cards including his Player of the Month card will increase by +2 in face rating since that would be the difference between his summer 83 NIF and an 85 winter NIF.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been superb since the beginning of the 2019-20 season, but he is still only 84 rated on Sofifa at the time of this post. If that holds true, then whether or not his special cards receive an upgrade will depend on the stats given to a theoretical 84 rated winter NIF, as his dribbling face stat would need to increase by one point to equal his 85 rated in-form. The would appear likely to occur, but keep in mind the Heung Min Son example above where the winter NIF was kept just low enough to prevent triggering an upgrade. If TAA's winter NIF is 84 but does increase by at least one point in dribbling then all of his special cards including the Player of the Month for December would increase by one point in face rating, as that would equal the difference between his 83 rated summer NIF and an 84 rated winter NIF.

    Lastly, I saw someone else ask about Bruno Fernandes and how potential transfers are affected by the winter refresh. Fernandes is currently still 85 rated on Sofifa but if he were to receive an 86 rated winter NIF then his 86 rated Team of the Group Stage card would increase to 87 but it would remain a Sporting card even if he changes clubs in the next month. Only live cards change clubs when they receive an update. In any case, that's the last thing I can think of that may be of interest regarding the winter refresh and this ended up being quite a bit longer than I initially intended, but since questions have started popping up in the sub I wanted to provide this little FAQ to answer them.

    Hey all - wanted to give an update since the initial thread got a lot of attention.

    I was actually able to get to 1003 packs saved before I began opening the packs... I started on Friday and I've still got players I'm cycling through as of today (this is with doing about 10-12 hours per day of opening/cycling).

    Icons packed? 0. 1000+ packs - 0 icons packed.

    Toty packed? Five. 2 x De Jong (one tradeable) - 2 x alisson (untradeable) - and a Trent Alexander Arnold (Untradeable)

    I was also able to do the Hazard SBC, Marcelo sbc, Luiz SBC, and Silva SBCs with fodder... Further I was able to craft 6 Base icons which yielded Sanchez, Seedorf, Henry, Socrates, Ferdinand, and Guardiola.

    Still cycling but slowing down for sure and almost at the point where the club is mostly* rinsed of players again

    Top - non TOTY players packed: UCL Oblak, UCL Chiellini, UCL Insigne, Ramos, Son x 2, Aubameyang

    How was it compared to last year? Not nearly as successful. I feel like pack weight was way less- last year I got loads of 89+ players- this year it was not the case. These were different packs though- and I attribute that to the lack of Icon SBCs- which meant there was a lot more waste when trying to cycle players as I didn't have a lot of places to throw duplicate IF's.

    The other aggravating thing here. UCL cards. Can we talk about them for a moment? You can get a UCL card in a 2 rare gold pack or upgrade pack- however the UCL card does not count as a rare gold in an upgrade SBC. This is 100% a way EA rips us off. For those cycling and rinsing their club it is potentially giving you a card you can't recycle. For those that thought UCL Cards were useless - you were wrong. This was their intended use all along. To frustrate and give the illusion of something good.

    84+ UCL walkouts? I got at least 12+ of them- and of course, was aggravated with each and every one even though I knew the tell/what to look for to differentiate.

    I wouldn't call this nearly as successful as it was for me last year, but it is still a lesson in patience and it's fun to do to maximize your chances for a TOTY card that's first owner. All that being said, had I opened my packs along the way- I probably could've had a much higher coin balance (I think I ended around 4 mil coins, but I'd opened some packs, bought some players for SBCs while I was completing them throughout)- and I still have a ton of consumables to sift through

    Side notes: 1000+ packs+cycling - no Mendy. 3 player picks. 1 Draft token... 3 shadows, 1 hunter.

    Definitely available if anybody has any questions or anything they were wondering about it

    They racked up the cash they expected from the community, released couple SBCs to dry everyone even more. Now, they wait and watch everyone going crazy and hungry for some new "affordable" content so next promo they can do the same thing, take your money, give you nothing, dry out all your blood and take a piss on your face. Rinse and repeat, every promo. They figured it out perfectly.
