    PSA: There are useful attacking d-pad options, not just your meta defensive tactics

    Recently I decided to try the 5-2-1-2, and I stumbled across something that I personally didn't think too much about in all my years of playing fifa and that is the different ATTACKING d-pad tactics. I was mainly familiar with the defensive tactics Overload Ball Side, Offside Trap, Team Press, and Striker Drop down, but I figured a lot of people might have questions as to how they affect gameplay so here it is:

    From the Pitch Notes:

    Attacking Full Backs (d-pad up → d-pad left) - This tactic results in your Full Backs moving to a more advanced position until you lose possession. They push forward similarly to how a Wing Back can push forward in some 5 defender formations.

    Hug Sideline (d-pad up → d-pad right) - This tactic helps increase the width of your wide players, meaning that they'll be more likely to play close to the sideline. Wide Players are Wingers (including Left and Right Midfielders), Full Backs, and Wing Backs.

    Extra Attacker (d-pad up → d-pad down) - This tactic helps bolster your attack with an additional player. The Extra Attacker tactic considers the attacking attributes and instructions of your players before determining which player should act as the Extra Attacker. It weighs these factors during player selection, meaning that it will try to follow your player instructions in most cases.

    Get In The Box (d-pad up → d-pad up) - This tactic maximizes the amount of players that will try to get inside the box when you're in a crossing situation.

    BONUS TIPS on how to use these tactics according to EA:

    Bonus Tip - Are you trying to overwhelm your opponent's defense? Activate Extra Attacker, Get In The Box, and Attacking Full Backs at the same time. These instructions help maximize your team's attacking efforts. Just remember, this could leave you very open to counter attacks.

    Bonus Tip - Want to send your goal kick wide but your players are narrowly positioned? Activate the Hug Sideline D-Pad Tactic before taking your kick, and your wide players will instantly try to spread out.

    Personally for me I use my full backs on balanced but figuring out that I can have them on stay back by default (for defensive stability) and manually control their runs, as well as making them go out wider for players using overload ball side has been a great help to my play. Hope it might help someone else.

    Week in and week out, 90% of the TOTW is unusable, and on top of that the ones that would actually benefit the team of someone who plays WL regularly are exponentially harder to pack. Meaning there's probably a 1-100 chance of packing something useful from your red picks if you finish Gold 1 or Elite 3. With so many promos coming out and promo cards being VASTLY superior to the TOTW cards, TOTW is becoming irrelevant and along with it so are red picks. Red picks should include promo cards as well. This happens around TOTS and everyone loves it. It should happen all year round.

    The Investors View of EA and FIFA.

    I'm seeing a lot of lightbulbs turning on when people read this. That makes me happy. It's all starting to make sense now. I'm hoping this post will make you look at certain aspects of the game more critically, and more importantly, understand why EA chose to do one thing over the other. They have gotten away with this for too long.

    I figured that since I have knowledge on these topics, I would take some time to share my theory on possibly why this game is so completely broken and busted.

    I'm not going to provide a TLDR since I think you need to read the entire post.

    Electronic Arts, as we all know, is a massive company who participates in a number sub-markets of gaming. Not only this, but they are a global power player in gaming.

    Since the company is publicly traded here in the United States, analysts track and follow their every move, literally. They will speak with the company executives, communicate with the investor relations department, and most importantly, analyze and report on different benchmarks for tracking a games popularity and reception.

    It's important to note that analysts will only refer to Ultimate Team as a profit center and not the game(s) itself. I will provide my insight from what I have read in these research reports and I would like you to draw your own conclusions:

    On Volta: Investors believe that players will decrease spending on FUT with the introduction of Volta as a game mode. Since Volta itself is not monetized, they fear that players will enjoy this game mode more and stop playing FUT.

    On Special Events: Investors strongly noted the slowdown in FUT sales with the launch of the World Cup Ultimate Team in June/July 18.

    On Resource Allocation: EA had/has strong plans to make Apex Legends into a core franchise. They actually gave Respawn (Apex Legends Studio) the ability to pull developers from the DICE team (Battlefield), EA Vancouver (Sports), and EA Shanghai to provide additional developer resources and help with content creation. Also, when Apex first launched, they had issues with servers and they fixed almost immediately by adding additional server capacity (or possibly reallocating capacity).

    On Packs/Loot Boxes: Investors are seriously concerned about the impact of government regulation surrounding loot boxes.

    Loss of Licensing For Key IP: This is by far the one thing that EA cannot lose. Investors did not see Juventus switching their licensing, and made them aware that this is a possibility in the future for more teams.

    Some numbers for you all to digest:

    *As of 2019/20

    • 75% of players who purchase FIFA play FUT

      • 3M daily users during TOTS. Highest for FIFA19
      • Player base has increased 15%
      • In game matches up 30%
      • 75% of the games sale price goes to licensing

    Final thoughts: After reading through a large amount of earnings call transcripts and earnings reports I can confidently arrive at the following conclusions:

    FIFA and Madden Ultimate Team are by large their biggest titles in terms of revenue, with FIFA dominating Madden.

    All of the questions from the analysts have nothing to do with servers, game issues, or communication - more so it's about profit generation.

    "How will you be able to monetize VOLTA?"

    "Will you add more options to customization in FIFA to drive more profits."

    Just thought I would arm you all with this information and prompt a discussion. I can confidently say, the analysts covering EA are not on this subreddit nor are they playing the game. They just listen to what EA executives tell them, and in turn, write that down and add it to their research report.
