FIFA 20 - mental health and wellbeing

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 04:08 AM PDT

This is a serious post, and a seriously long post. The leading cause of death in 15-35 year old men is suicide, and 15-35 year old men is pretty much the target demographic of FUT.

I've had a couple of close friends face some really challenging times in the last year, and count myself lucky that they have opened up and talked to myself and others before it's too late. A lot of people aren't that lucky.

So you are probably wondering how this relates to FIFA. I guess I'm sort of asking a favour, of as many people as possible....

FIFA is a game, people play it to relax and unwind, people play it because it's fun, people play it because it's something they are good at when they feel like they are shit at other things in life. We all know how good it can make us feel when things are going our way, when we win a few games, when we pack a great player. For a lot of people, when they've had a bad day they can turn to FIFA and know it's something that can cheer them up or make them feel better.

What I'm trying to illustrate is that the person on the other side of that screen could be going through a really shitty time, that can be someone who just lost a relative, just found out they have cancer, just failed college, just lost their job.

There seems to be an increasing trend, on this forum and in the game itself, to be shitty towards people- to wind people up, to try and sap the joy out of other people's playing experience as much as possible, and to try to make them feel as shitty as possible in the process of playing a video game which should be a positive experience.

I look back at some of my comments on this subreddit and to an extent I'm guilty of that as well - if someone posts showing off their squad I'm the first to tell them that it belongs in the squad thread, or to call them out when they are clearly flexing but trying to disguise it as a question about the game or their squad. I forget that for some people on here, they might not have friends in real life to share this with, and affirmation from strangers on Reddit could actually bring some positivity to their day, it takes less than half a second for me to scroll past if I'm not interested, or drop a positive comment or suggestion about their squad in the thread, so going forward that's what I'll do. To anyone that applies to on here - I'm sorry for being a bit of a dick.

When it comes to the game itself, we know what triggers us, and we know what triggers other people - whether that is watching all the replays and celebrating extensively, using all the pauses at the end of a game, quitting when you're drawing with someone but you know they are going to win, sending shitty messages after a game... There are a lot of shitty things that EA let you do, personally I'm not too bothered by any of these, but the demographic that play FIFA are the most vulnerable from a mental health perspective, and so the most likely to be affected by these negative behaviours.

I get pissed off when I think about someone behaving like that towards someone I care about - my brother in law who's getting bullied, my friend who just lost his brother in a car crash earlier this year. Is there a reason to be toxic and negative towards these people you don't know?

What I'm asking of everyone is just to be a bit kinder. That's it. On here, in the game, in real life. It literally costs you nothing not to be a dick. Instead of sending shitty messages when you lose, try sending positive or encouraging messages when you win, skip your replays and celebrations, don't quit out on someone in a penalty shootout just because you know you're about to lose.

I'd also urge EA to actually consider the mental health of their players in the way they design their game - find me another game where your opponent can force you to watch their celebrations and replays for 3-4 whole minutes of your life each game, or a game where you have to play up to 10hrs per weekend to remain "competitive", the game should promote sportsmanship - give XP or coins for skipping replays etc, the game should promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle - give people bonus xp if they hit 10,000 steps in a day or go to the gym, or do something that gets them away from the screen.

Tl:Dr; the demographic that play FIFA are the most vulnerable from a mental health perspective. You don't know how shitty a day the other person has had, so just be kind to them for fucks sake.

Lastly, I would urge anyone who feels like they are struggling to reach out and talk to someone, a friend, a family member, or if it's easier to talk to a complete stranger - the Samaritans offer a fantastic service in the UK where you can talk in confidence to a complete stranger about anything that's getting you down. They do a fantastic job and have helped somebody very close to me this year, for which I am really thankful.

Edit: posted this before I went to the beach today, expected it to get a couple of upvotes and die in new but I'm genuinely appreciative of the time people have taken to read this and get involved in the conversation! Thank you so much for the awards and positive messages, I'll do my best to get involved in the comments but there is an awful lot to read through.

    Marvel Themed Scream?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:58 PM PDT

Just noticed the 3 SCREAM SBC's have been Hulk, Draxler, and Giovinco... I think it is Marvel Super Hero Themed, maybe??? Hulk is obvious, DRAXler = Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy. And Giovinco's nickname is "Ant-Man"...

Just a thought. Maybe a THORgan Hazard or Niklas STARK up next?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:42 PM PDT

And man oh man has EA made that easy this year so far! Havent done one. If youre feeling any doubts, seriously dont do it. So much more fun to stack up coins and use players as you wish!

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:57 PM PDT

Everyone hating how bad this game is, but noone tells the truth.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 07:42 AM PDT

The truth is, lets be honest, the game IS fun. Otherwise we wouldn´t be playing it.I am sick of reading day by day, how bad the game is, how bad tackling is, how fucked up playerswitching is etc.

99% of this stuff just happens, when the servers are fucked, and that is nearly 100% of the time.WHEN you get good servers, in the freakin middle of the night at 3 am, which I forced myself to play the weekend league, the game feels and plays fantastic.

With the blink of an eye you forget about crappy player switches and bullshit goals.

Happens in real life too, BUT you can do something about it, WHEN the shitty servers are finally working.

Try offline kickoff, the game plays fantastic too. Yea it has some flaws, but which game has not?

Bottom line, the servers are so bad this year as never, and it can´t be spread enough. I can not believe that EA is the only company who can´t get this server thing right, not even close. And that should be in every single post, tweet, etc. They have to fix that fucking shit.

My last fifa was Fifa 13 and bought 20 for nostalgia and I have to say

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:41 AM PDT

This game is so much more fun, even if im not good. I just did my 2nd weekend league and got BARELY gold 2 after a 120 minute match (scored the 110th minute with my 87 red Parejo that I use as sub and got on my last weekend league haha) while having 2 games left and needed 1 more for gold 2. Last week I got silver 1 and I aimed for gold this week and I did it :D

It's also so nice to get so many free stuff compared to fifa 13 by just playing(I love weekend league), cuz I remember the only team I could ever make was a 20~k pace team with aubemayang on front who costed like 2k back then lmao + I feel like back then u could beat a 5 mil team with a 20k pace team aswell, now it feels WAY more rewarding if u buy a good player, u really feel how big of an improvement u get). Already have a Lewandowski and some others right now in my team when I just started! (180k~ team and 110k coins saving for Reus rn!)

Just wanted to put this out, because I see a lot of people complaining about the game. I'm loving it so far! (sorry for the weird grammar, just typed this out quick:D)

How 80+ people are getting 30-0 this week...

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 07:03 AM PDT

I'm not going to say how you do it, but it only works if you're drawing.

If you do it when you're losing, then it will say "Your match is under review" and will still count as a loss.

If you do it when winning, then it game will just not count at all, and all that will happen is you'll lose contracts/fitness, (so basically no point using it if you're winning).

BUT, if you do it when drawing, similarly to when you're winning, the game will just not count. So, pro's are using it to dodge each other, or when they come up against someone with a god squad. Basically allowing them to win every game, hence why there is 80+ 30-0s this week.

People complaining about overpriced and useless sbcs are the same people that would complain about a meta card like ibra in 19 being cheap and on everyones team. EA will literally never win, cant please everyone and thats facts. Let the downvotes rain

FUT Sliders: Try them in Single Player!

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:07 PM PDT

Sprint Speed: 48 Acceleration: 48 Shot Error: 65 Pass Error: 65 Shot Speed: 40 Pass Speed: 47 Goalkeeper Ability: 30 Positioning: Marking:20 Positioning: Run Frequency: 25 First Touch Control Error: 75

Some interesting things: The classic "defender won't move" or "defender moving out of the way" happens because if your Marking falls below 15 it's physically impossible to move them near a player. You can try this yourself, it will happen every time.

Opponents or you don't get defensive boosts outside goalkeepers: it's all due to First Touch Control Error. This dictates everything. If it's over 70, opposition defenders do the iconic teleportation tackle every time because the game forces them to win the ball because your player "can't control it." Similar, if it falls below 35 opposition defenders can't take the ball away unless you arent taking touches with the ball. Although it's called First Touch, it affects every touch you take with the ball.

So yeah, defending isn't scripted, the Positioning: Marking and First Touch Control Error force this to happen in game.

Replays and cut-scenes in Champs and Rivals need to go or be minimised as much as possible

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:17 PM PDT

A buddy of mine and I decided to perform a little experiment and have a game, where we both have 5 shots off target, 3 goals, have 7 throw-ins and 5 corners each, both make all three substitutions, making two pauses in due course and watch all the damned replays and cutscenes without skipping.

Now, these aren't the average numbers of a FIFA game nowadays, with all the defensive mindset players have, but we decided it's a fair representation of a good, back and forth matchup, where both sides want to score goals. Frankly, that's not the point.

What I'm trying to say is that whole shitfest took just about 20 minutes. And this is without two periods of extra in-game time 15 mins each, which would be another 5 minutes or so, including the 30 sec interval between them. It's without the standard penalty shootout, which takes roughly 2 minutes. Now imagine spending nearly 30 minutes of your day, of your life even, playing the sweatiest of sweatiest opponents, for them only to quit just before you take the decisive penalty, leaving you with nothing but frustration.

There will be people claiming they use the time to chill, take a breather, drink water, etc. I get that. But it's a 12-minute game already and we all have 3 pauses per player and a half-time interval. Use them for that.

I also agree there can't be no replays/cut-scenes but there's a difference between my opponent fist-pumping the air, hugging it out for a gew seconds and we kick the ame off again, and wathcing them shush me all the way to the halfway line, just to do the silly group dance celebration and then watch the replay and their player applauding the crowd for over half a minute. Really something that has to be addressed.
