    Didn't watch Bayern games regularly except this CL season, today he was immense! And Thiago was so calm and composed, loved watching him ping the ball and relieve pressure.

    My reflections from my first year of FUT

    I just finished my first cycle of FUT. It was easily one of the most incredible and maddening periods of my gaming life. I'm sharing my reflections for personal closure and in case it helps any of the other new guys make sense of their experience too.

    Background: 32 year old in southern Europe. My favorite childhood pastime was collecting and trading football cards/panini stickers. If you told my friends and I about FUT in 1998 when we were checking card prices in a paper magazine, we would have done unspeakable things just to try it out! I've been playing fifa here and there since 2006 (University days)… Back then, my housemates and I would draft custom teams and rearrange the game's roster and then we used some kind of league mode to keep track of rank and record. Since then, I mostly played with friends, played a few in-person tournaments in bars and did some online seasons in the past (quite casually). 2020 was my first time getting deep into FUT though.

    FUT 20 year in summary: I played mostly division rivals throughout the year and did about 1 weekend league per month. I started off in S1, Div 7. I didn't improve a lot with gameplay for most of the year and relied on upgrading my team to keep up with the competition. Once quarantine started, I played A LOT and focused on improving gameplay. By summer, I was consistently finishing G2/D5. I know for most of the people on this reddit, that's nothing interesting, but it was an accomplishment for me. I was stoked. I pushed for G1/D4 and came so close multiple times (like 117 min lead for win 20!!). However, I found playing at 1200 SR and +10 ELO too intense to really enjoy. I was in over my head at that point. It became clear I would need to take a step back and improve some fundamentals to take the next step forward, but it's August and it's time for a break.

    Why I loved the experience:

    • Weekend league is awesome. The hope of the first 10 games. Getting a 120 min winner with your new signing… the adrenaline of the final game to clinch that next ranking. Coming back from 2-0 against a shushing rat to get an unexpected win…. For a competitive person who loves football, it doesn't get much better.

    • Strategically crafting a team that gets you the next ranking is incredibly satisfying. Whether it's a single blockbuster signing, or re-organising everything to try a new style, when your mastermind strategy results in cheeky goals and dramatic wins, it feels amazing.

    • Pack Crack—I'm a grown man and I got mad giddy saving up 50 packs for some promotion. I face timed my brother and we drank a few beers while going through them. The doors, the lights, the sound… like, damn these guys know how to reduce a grown man to a kid opening up presents.

    The pain points of playing FUT:

    • Time.Time.Time. You have to grind a lot to keep up with the power curve (or you have to spend money?). For me, I found playing behind the power curve to be unbelievably frustrating. If you'd like to play semi-competitively, FUT is a selfish lover and leaves little time for other hobbies / games.

    • Unrewarding – obvious, but it needs to be said: they're too stingy with rewards/pack weights. It just feels awful after dedicating half your weekend to WL to pack 82 rated TOTW players. I get EA's business logic. Still… people deserve better after playing 30 games in a single weekend. Like, would it kill player engagement to let G3 players pick whatever sub-85 player they want or to give a 10% chance at a 85+ card? I really don't think so.

    • With stat upgrading, FUT gameplay loses balance at points throughout the year. Pacey wingers vs slow defenders in the fall…In the spring, the invincible dribblers that could dragback your CB to another planet, 90+ everything in the summer creating chaos, etc. If you're optimistic, it's nice that the game changes shape and style—It adds an interesting element of strategy to the game. Looking at it more pessimistically, it's just a constant revolving door of cards that give an unfair advantage and game mechanics that are easy to exploit.

    Looking forward:

    As a recent post asked, would you do it all again? All in all, I'm glad I did it, but I don't think I can play hardcore FUT again (±1600 games). Don't get me wrong, I'd love to continue playing with my favorite players and slowly get better at the game. However, I'm not confident I could do it enjoyably as a casual player (4-6 hours of gameplay + menu grinding a week). At the end, I wish FUT was also designed for casual players. The ideal situation would be that I could build off what I accomplished this season into next season. It would be fantastic if I could take 3 of my favorite players into next season (PIM socrates becomes baby socrates, SH Dembele becomes gold NIF dembele, and FBD ASM becomes gold ASM). Something like that plus a meaningful div rivals system might make it more enjoyable for a casual experience.

    Fut 20 was a lovely distraction from an otherwise devastating year.
