This is a game - this is the way games work (extremely simplified)

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 08:35 AM PST

I don't think 99% of this sub (or most other gaming related subs, for that matter) have the slightest understanding of how games or software actually work. At least it absolutely doesn't seem like it, from all the posts with videos showing visual glitches.

Everything within the realms of software is just endless rows of mumbo-jumbo coding to most people. What they think they can understand is this: how things look and feel.

Take a situation where a shot is made and we all get to enjoy a slowmo video of the shot clipping through a defenders leg (and we upvote it a thousand times over!). It's right that might seem weird. And it's right in most realms of this world: if object A and object B clashes they will react to that clash and logic will decide what happens. If this picture would be real, yes, the shot would be blocked and that's that. But it isn't.

This is a game. This is 01100101001001. There's tons of different layers of code and calculations deciding what will happen. What we see as players and balls and grass and goalposts, is all those calculations represented as colored pixels (because just looking at the beauty of the calculations themselves wouldn't really be very attractive to people who would like to play a football game).

The code decide what is going to happen. The graphic representation does absolutely not. While it looks weird and wrong, there's nothing wrong about it, except from the mismatch between the code and the representation.

This is extremely common in all software. And people working in software are much, much, MUCH more focused on getting the calculations right, then getting the visual representation right. In general. Though, both is of course needed for a good or great end-product.

Everyone of us can make a 6 minute video out of every 12 minute game if we want to, finding all mismatches between calculation and the visual representation.

While you could argue it's a certain measure of a games' quality, it's not all there is to it when it comes to the game in question being good or bad.

Input lag and bad server connection, over representation of skill moves and other gameplay details are the real issues. This is not.

As long as we, the players, are focusing on these things, the devs have good reason to be happy with their product in general. It's complex as hell making a game of this size and scope and the ball and a leg not being represented correct here and there is such a small, tiny issue in the grander scheme of things.

You actually get all of this, right, even if you upvote the same-same-but-different clips over and over again?

I wouldn't mind a FUT Champions upgrade style SBC for standard TOTWs

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 04:55 AM PST

SBCs are generally so bad that i'm not doing them (I honestly can't imagine i'll be doing a single Icon SBC this year), and objectives don't need TOTW cards, so i'm sat here with a bunch of untradeable TOTW cards that will just sit there rotting. To solve this, why not add an SBC that you can submit 5 TOTW cards for 1 84+ TOTW. It ticks the boxes of being a potential coin sink to anyone who thinks that's actually good value to do with tradeables (a huge factor for EA in making SBCs), and also lets me offload redundant 75 rated TOTWs that i'm getting from the endless untradeable packs on offer across FUT.

TEAM USA QUEST FOR ELITE – WEEKEND LEAGUE FOUR

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 01:40 PM PST

What's up guys? Had another weekend league with these fine American patriots. Now that we've played four weekend leagues, we're starting to get a sense of what the real challenges will be. We played 19 games and won 14. Won the front 6, went 1 for our next 5, then closed 7-1. Peak ELO was +10, which needs to improve as we need to hold +15 form for elite. But you start a 4 minute mile by running a quarter mile in a minute, so hitting +15 once is the first goal. I averaged 65% possession and had 6 shots a game compared to my opponents 4. As a reminder, in-game team is here.

After player performances, I've left some reflections on how I can improve despite my team being… well, Americans playing soccer. May be useful to you.

    PLAYER PERFORMANCES

Nick "BOOK OF MORMON" Lima – 9G,14A. The servant of Salt Lake left behind his hero ball and was on a mission to provide assists. His long runs out wide from the sole striker spot was helpful. If this lad had 4* skills, he would be so much stronger. There are only so many heel-to-heels you can pull off before the defense catches on.

Christian "THE PILGRIM" Pulisic – 23G, 4A. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the golden boy was taking EVERYTHING for himself this weekend, racking up more than a goal a game. Sure, he gets bullied around. Sure, he gets injured all the time. But his 1-2s with Lima and berbas in the box paid off this weekend.

Darlington "TURDUCKEN" Nagbe – 6G,7A. You may think playing a man with 79 pace on the wing is an abomination. You may think "his 59 shooting totally holds him back." And you may think that his dribbling, while good, isn't near good enough to hold off team press. But somehow, this combination of not-strengths turns into a beautiful cornucopia of creative runs, tasty assists, and side goals. I've found a horizontal creative run from the wing while I drive with Puli to the sideline gave him a handful of key tap-ins.

Sergino "MANIFESTINY" Dest – 0G,0A, 1 red card. As I'll speak to in the next section, holding leads was hell this weekend. This lad would not be denied – getting a red for tackling a sweaty Salah from behind just outside the box to hold onto a 3-2 win, making key fouls and passes late in matches, using the occasional stepover to relieve pressure. He was the outlet, the way forward, and the hero.

Zach "TURKEY" Steffen – 6 shut outs. He had one good game and many games where you're like "just because you're a turkey doesn't mean you should let everything in, man. You're overfilling it." He's getting swapped out for Guzan next week.

PAIN POINTS AND WAYS TO FIX IT

SECOND HALVES. Much like American, my team got shittier the longer the show went on. Almost every game went like this – I dominate the first half, miss a chance or two because old Book of Mormon is not an actual striker, usually wouldn't allow more than one shot, and get a goal or two. Then the second half, my team would suck. Team press would be suffocating, players would refuse to hit a pass, and bullshit sweaty goals and deflections would make easy W's close and close games losses. I'm going to track first vs second half scores next week. My strategy to fix this is make more subs (more JOMO and Sabbi time) and just straight up stop trying to score if I'm up past the 75th minute.

BREAKING TEAM PRESS. This is hard for everyone, but especially when your team uh… (checks notes)… sucks. I've been working on some strategies for this and may even bring on Jozy Altidore as an thiccc outlet up top and slide Lima into the midfield when I'm up.

PENALTIES. Good lord, the best penalty taker I have has 66 pens. Lima missed 3 or 4 of these that any striker would've hit.

CREATIVE RUNS. If I do them, I score much more often. If I don't do them, I do not score much more often. This is our concern, dude. Also working on those player switch runs in friendlies ATM - i'll keep you posted.

IS IT SCRIPTING ISSUE OR A CLOSING GAMES? What would a post about the state of America be without a conspiracy theory? IMO, the difference in how the team played between the two halves makes me question whether the game is designed to punish dominant possession play. This was even more obvious after going up 2 goals, which I've previously rejected as a premise. If the possession chart was a heat map, it'd be looking real sexy by my opponent's goal in my games. But that's because I have to play patient as a strong wind will knock my team of the ball. After reading the post earlier this week about DDA written into the game, I need to find a different way to close out games – or prevent my team from turning into turnstiles in second halves.

Would love your advice on any of the above - will give it another go this weekend. Have a lovely Thanksgiving weekend, even though the holiday 1) sucks 2) celebrates some super not nice things and 3) involves our least-greatest hits of food.
