    r/FIFA's 2021 Content Voting Results

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:11 AM PST

For those who missed it, 2 weeks ago we created this thread, which got stickied 5 more times during the past 2 weeks, asking you all to help us set the rules for content that should be allowed and should not be allowed anymore within r/FIFA.

As previously discussed, content rules in the sub are dictated by voting megathreads, feedback you guys provide to us via modmail and individual threads created by the community about specific topics seen a lot in the sub, most recently with the significant amount of concept cards posts getting frequently submitted in r/FIFA.

    The Results

The r/FIFA Wiki has been updated to include all the automatic content removal rules currently in effect.

Thanks to everyone who helped us by voting!

*The line between concept cards and card preditions is very thin but since they are both in theory a "concept", they will all be removed.

**As discussed in the original voting thread, we will only allow WL reviews when a post actually has text and OP is including tactics or tips on gameplay. If it's just a picture of an app showing WL record and the squad, they will be removed.

***Remember that pictures showing personal information like gamertags or names or anything that could lead to doxxing or witch-hunting are not allowed. TL;DR, blur/hide the names.

Following the rate of Icon SBC releases thus far, by the end of the year we'll have gotten a total of 36 or 39 Icon SBC.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:43 AM PST

Literally 1/3 of Icons through SBC, and the majority of them not even primes, all only temporarily available.

Imagine going all out advertising your 100 icons with 4 different versions each, for 400 total (404 counting Beckham), and making barely 10% of them obtainable outside packs, and only even crossing 10% by including swaps that they've cut down so hard that the fodder is the obvious better choice.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:01 PM PST

I rarely see anyone do any significant skill moves anymore, ever since the latest patch, all I see people do is rapidly 180ing with their player left and right, ball roll, fake ball roll, ball roll some more, some more rapid direction changes and either glitching through your defense with a bridge or a finesse shot.

It's so boring. I feel like I spend most of the game jockeying for my life

Modern 3241 Tactic Guide: Dominate Your Opponents

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:19 PM PST

This is essentially an evolution of my previous tactic. If you haven't read that guide, here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/FIFA/comments/kps67n/modern_4231325_tactic_guide/

It works off of all of the same footballing principles and 'philosophy' about the game, so I won't repeat myself here in regards to that.

    The Tactic

    3421

    • Pressure after possession loss
    • 5 defensive width
    • 10 depth
    • Balanced
    • 5 attacking width
    • 5 players in box

    Player Instructions

    • GK: sweeper keeper, comes for crosses
    • LCM and RCM: stay back while attacking, cover centre
    • LM: come back on defence, stay wide
    • RM: stay wide
    • LF: come back on defence
    • ST: stay central, get in behind

    All other instructions on default.

    Attacking Shape

The idea is to create a 3-2-4-1 shape in possession. This means:

    • A back 3, spread across the pitch, with the wide centre backs in the halfspaces
    • Two holding midfielders
    • One player on each flank (the LM and RM)
    • Two players attacking the halfspaces (LF and RF)
    • A central attacker (the ST)

I'm honestly surprised this formation isn't more widely adopted by the FIFA community. If you look at most top coaches (Klopp, Guardiola, Tuchel, Conte, Flick) nowadays, they create a 3-2-4-1 shape in possession.

They do this because it works. It's essentially the same 'W-M' shape that coaches used in the 1920's. It's the best combination of width, numbers in attack and players in dangerous areas whilst retaining defensive solidity and the ability to stop counter attacks.

The 3421 formation is the best way I have found to replicate this.

    Defensive Shape

Most guides I've seen for 3 defender formations (352, 3421, etc) instruct the LM and RM to 'come back on defence', forming a back 5 out of possession. This obviously works for lots of people, but I find it a bit passive for my liking.

The issue is that if your LM and RM are defending as fullbacks, you only have two players in midfield, making it almost impossible to press the opposition. There's no point in playing 'press after possession loss' and 10 depth if you can't actually press… So what's the solution?

    Defending as a 442

Note that in the player instructions, the LM and LF both come back on defence. This means that the LM will defend as a LB and the LF will defend as a LM. The back 3 will shift over to the right (the RCB becomes the RB).

We defend in a nice, compact 442 shape, which is much better for pressing.

Here's how it looks when defending:

    ——-ST——ST———

    ——————————

    LF—-CM—-CM—-RM

    ——————————

    LM—LCB—CB—RCB

Note: You can mirror the shape if you want (so the RM comes back to the RB spot). Just reverse the instructions of the RM and LM, and the RF and LF.

    Why it Works

The 3421 works especially well against most players in FIFA, because it matches up extremely well against the most commonly used formations in the game: 442, 4222, 4231, and even the dreaded 532. Having 3 central defenders gives you a spare man against two striker formations and makes it easy to play out from the back against them.

In attack, you essentially have 5 players (LM, LF, ST, RF, RM). The is often too much for a lowly back 4 to deal with. I often find my opposition will try to defend the LF/ST/RF combo by becoming narrow, leaving my LM/RM in acres of room on the sides.

If my opposition's fullback tries to cover the LM/RM, it will leave gaps in their defence for your other attackers to exploit.

It even works well against 433's (something that the 532 and 352 can be weak against) because we defend in a 442 shape.

    Player Archetypes

    • ST - I like quick strikers who can hold off defenders with their physicality. E.g. M.Dembele, Kulusevski, Lautaro Martinez. However, any striker you're comfortable with will work here, whether it's Neymar or Weghorst. They'll be making runs in behind, playing one-twos with the LF/RF and getting on the end of crosses/cut-backs from the LM/RM.
    • RF - An attacking player with good dribbling, shooting, passing. E.g. Dybala, Messi, Neymar. Doesn't need rapid pace.
    • LF - An attacking player with good dribbling, shooting, passing, stamina and workrates. They'll be running back to the LM spot when you lose the ball, so stamina and decent defensive workrates are a massive bonus. E.g. Bernardo Silva, Griezmann, Suarez moments, Portu, Mane.
    • RM - A right-footed winger. E.g. Sterling, Lozano, Carrasco, Portu
    • LM - A left-footed fullback or wide midfielder with good defensive stats. They'll need good stamina to get up and down. E.g. Acuna showdown, Cucurella objectives, Grimaldo, Alphonso Davies.
    • CM - Both CMs should be all-rounders, with good passing and defensive stats, which being reasonably press-resistant and be able to keep the ball in tight spaces. I like one with M/H workrates and one with H/H or M/M, but it's not essential. E.g. Partey, Tonali, Llorente, KDB, Verratti, de Jong.
    • RCB - They'll be defending as a right back and attacking as a RCB, so and quick, defensively strong right back or quick CB. Ideally right-footed. E.g. Bellerin, Varane, Ansaldi, Dalot, Florenzi, Alex Moreno.
    • Central CB - This is your least agile centre back. Good passing is a big plus, as they can play balls into midfield or out to the wing. Still E.g. Gimenez rule breakers, Varane, RTTF Akanji, VVD.
    • LCB - Ideally someone left-footed (or with a good weak foot), as it helps with distribution. Must be quick. A tall left back or quick centre back. E.g. Ansaldi, Yuri Beriche, Alaba, Delaney, Diego Carlos, Boateng.

The example players I have provided are players I have personally used. I haven't used many 'meta' players or 1 million coin+ players, but I have no doubts they'll work in this tactic.

    Possession Variation

Obviously this is a very attacking tactic. If I'm in the lead or struggling to hold possession, I have a second variation that I occasionally switch to in order to gain more control of the match. It's still good for creating chances, but is slightly more in the 'sterile domination' category. All of the custom tactics and players instructions are the same as before, except:

    • I uses the 'possession' tactic (instead of 'balanced').
    • The LF & RF are on 'stay central' and 'false 9'.

    A Note on 10 Depth

If you're worried about using 10 depth, check out Steve Stokes The FIFA Coach's video about depth in FIFA. 10 depth doesn't make your defensive line that much higher than on lower depths - the players are just more proactive in defending.

I tried playing on lower depths and less aggressive defensive mentalities (balanced and drop back) and I found I conceded more goals. There were large gaps between my defensive line and my midfield.

I find it's much better to minimise the space between the lines and be compact defensively.

    Conclusion

Will this tactic help you get Elite 1 in Weekend League? Maybe, maybe not. The real questions are:

Is it the most fun I've had playing FIFA this year? Yes.

Have I used it to beat (and completely outplay) opponents with superior squads to mine? Yes.

Of course, it does require some cojones to play. If you give the ball away in the first two thirds of the pitch, you can get countered. That's why it's important you have players capable of looking after the ball.

The upside is that you'll have plenty of passing options for each player and a varied, dynamic attack.

    Give it a try!

My biggest frustration about this game is that it doesn't really represent how good players are in real life

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:02 AM PST

One of my biggest pet peeves of this sub is when people talk about the meta and you get replies like 'loads of games have a meta it's just how it works'. Okay yeah that is true, but the difference is we only base our understanding of how things should work in most games on the games themselves, with fifa that is not the case as it is based much more on real life. For example if we look at something like COD, most people's understand of how the guns work from playing the game, so you learn how they work and what situation they are best in, over time this knowledge becomes larger and you end up with a meta that people are aware of and exploit. Similar thing happens on fifa, people try out different players and tactics and over time start to understand which are most important whether it be which player stats matter most or in game tactics etc. So that is basically the meta and what it means is in different games certain items become more favorable and others less so.

Okay so if you understand it like that fifa doesn't seem all that different to other games in that there are certain mechanics and techniques that work best, the difference is how much we know fifa is just wrong in so many different ways in a way we don't with other games. Lets go back to the COD example, the amount of people who know how good these guns actually are in real life is very small (maybe ex-army, historians perhaps and gun nuts), so they may play COD and say how unrealistic it is, how certain guns are totally misrepresented in the game and certain tactics players use don't make sense. But that number is a huge minority, most people who play the game know nothing about real life war or guns so the game is all they base it off, so to them it all makes perfect sense. In a lot of games you don't even have an real life base for the game to anchor to so it's all made up so here that's even more the case, with sports games like fifa it's completely different.

The majority of people who play fifa like football, it's why we bought the game in the first place and therefore a lot of us know a fair bit about football therefore we are all aware the game is very flawed. Pace is overdone to such an unrealistic extent that 'slow' players become unusable, apparently every player has to have the agility of Messi or Neymar to be able to play as an attacker, oh and apparently the main job of a center back is to be able to catch strikers running in behind. Traits many of the greatest footballers ever have like passing and general intelligence are completely ignored and the game funnels you down one narrow way of playing as EA have decided no one can attack using a big man up top or passing maestros in midfield. It just isn't football and we all know it.

Icons show this the most, everyone should want an icon in their team, literally any icon because they should be the best cards on the game. The greatest players to ever play in those positions like Bobby Moore, Van Basten, Paul Scholes, Alan Shearer, Javier Zanetti, Ryan Giggs are all shunned in favor of cards of bang average players in real life. I'm sorry if you build a football game and Varane is a better center back than Bobby Moore or Rashford is a better striker than Marco van Basten you've built your game wrong.

I wish EA gave us more GK sbcs

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:36 AM PST

I never understood why even on a day with no content, EA dont drop flashbacks or promo-related GK sbcs. I understand that they dont want to make it expensive because nobody will pay a huge premium for a GK, so why not just make it just about the cost of fodder at that rating?

I might be in the minority, but i love upgrading every position on my team, so using the same old gk all game is no fun.

Of course most GK's play the same, but i know im definitely not alone when i say there's definitely a certain level of sentimental value that comes with playing with special versions of your favorite players.
