My tips for gold players who want to get to elite

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 12:09 PM PST

I've been playing fut champions on a regular basis since fifa 18. I've gotten from am gold 3/gold 2 player in fifa 18, to a gold 1 player in fifa 19, and I've been able to get 21-24 wins every week in fifa 20, so I think I could call myself an « elite player »

Now, the reason I make this guide is not to show off how great of a fifa player I am for reaching elite. I'm really not and I still make tons of mistakes. However, when I watch my friends play the weekend league (who usually get to gold 3/gold 2) I notice certain bad habits they have, which stop them from getting better results & raging less on fut champions. In this guide I want to point out certain things that you need to start working on if you really want to improve.

Disclaimer: I'll not really going to talk about formations&custom tactics. I use the 4-2-3-1 with pretty standard instructions (fullbacks&cdm on stay back, cam on stay forward).

    Let's get started

Gaming setup: Just a few tips how to make this game more enjoyable to play:

-Turn the game sound off. This does make a difference. I usually listen to music while playing fifa, and sometimes I just play without any sound when I feel like I really have to focus on the game.

-DON'T play when you're raging. I know this sound obvious but I can't stress enough how important this is. You should NEVER go into a game when you feel even the slightest bit of frustration&anger inside you. This is a video game. The anger is not going to help you, it's only going to make you play worse. After a loss, especially if it's a frustrating one (which, let's be honest, most losses kind of are) you should take a break, do something else, eat something, etc. Even if it's just 5-10 minutes, this makes a massive difference and will stop you from fucking up your weekend league. Also, remember that in the weekend league, if you lose now, your next opponents are going to be weaker. So try to be philosophical about losing. It's going to even out in the end.

Build-up play: One of the things you really need to focus on is this. Honestly, most games are pretty much decided by who manages to get out of his own half more consistently. The advice I'm gonna give might sound pretty obvious, but the key is to apply these tips EVERY time you build up. So here are my tips:

-When your keeper has the ball, take your time. Throwing out the ball to the opponent is such an easy thing to avoid, as long as you take your time and wait for one of your fullbacks to get into some free space. Run around with your keeper, so your opponent tries to cover one fullback, which will leave the other one open.

-Build up by using your fullbacks. Then, you can decide if you want to use your cdm/cam, or if you want to play to your winger.

-Don't be too lazy to play backwards. I see soo many people who just want to get forward and who play even the most risky passes just to get upfield. Never forget that losing the ball in your own half is deadly in fifa.

-If you're in your own half, especially in the middle of the pitch, don't play a throughball if you could be playing a simple pass. I know it's temping, but more often than not those passes are going to go too far. There are certain situations where you can use your players momentum to get past an opponent, but you need to be ABSOLUTELY sure that the throughball is going to get to your player.

-Try to use the radar, it can help when you don't know if you can switch sides.

-Again: PATIENCE, PATIENCE and CONSISTENCY. That's really all it takes.

    Attacking:

-Use the L1-dribbling. Especially when you're in tight spaces and you need to get out, this is absolutely crucial. Makes a massive difference.

-Try to get comfortable with as many « basic » skills as you can. These include:

-ball roll: Just abuse this one. There are so many situations where a simple ball roll is going to get you out of trouble

-foot to foot: Not as good as last year but still good to get away from an opponent

    -Berbatov spin

    -All kinds of fake shots

-Dragback (especially to get into shooting positions)

-L2+right stick backwards—>right stick to the left or the right: Your player will perform a sort of slower, but more controlled berbatov spin. I don't use it that often but it can be quite useful.

-L1+ right stick to the left—>right stick to the right (or vice versa). Pretty cool because it's a 3-star-skill

These are pretty much the only skills I use, and the only ones you really need in my opinion. Just try to get these skills into your muscle memory so you don't even have to think about them anymore.

-Pressing L1 will make your other players run into space, R1 will make them run towards you

-Pressing the passing button a second time will make your pass be slightly elevated. Same for throughballs. This can be very useful when you play a pass and you're not sure if the defender is going to be able to get there, because the ball is going to go just above the opponents foot.

-Once you're in the final third, there's not really a magic trick to get the ball into the net. This is just something you'll get better at over time.

-If you're on the wing about 20-30metres from the goal line and a player is in the middle, pressing R1+cross will make your player perform a low cross. This doesn't work anymore when once you're inside the box, but when you use it correctly this is a guaranteed goal

-Don't use regular crosses they're useless this year

Pressing: Don't try to do it this year, it's pretty much impossible to properly press in fifa 20. Also, I'm not really good at it, so if that's your playstyle try to find a tutorial somewhere else.

Defending: Again, the more you play the better you'll get. Defending is all about predicting your opponent's movements, and there's really no shortcut to get better at defending imo. Here are a few rules that might nevertheless help you.

-Use the L2 button: If you aren't yet using it, this is probably the thing holding you back the most.

-Don't slide tackle too often. There's almost always a better alternative

-When you pull out a defender, especially one of your centerbacks, you should be certain that you'll get the ball. Otherwise, use your cdms to cover the space in front of your defense (Because AI defending has been nerfed in fifa 20, you should control your defenders manually once your opponent gets closer to the box. Still, don't just rush out)

-Pass back to your goalkeeper if you get the ball back and don't have any immediate passing options

    How to deal with EAids:

Try not to complain about it. NOW HEAR ME OUT: I don't mean you should just « gitgood » and stop complaining, some of the issues in this game are fucking unbelievable. HOWEVER: In 90% of the cases where you complain about your stupid fucking player playing such a stupid fucking pass, at least a part of the blame is on you. And there are certain things you can do to limit the amount of stupidity of your players.

-For example, making sure your player is facing in the right direction before you pass the ball makes a huge difference, passes at a 60degree, 90 degree or even 120 degree angle are just incredibly inconsistent, so try to avoid them.

-Also, some players turn more slowly than others, and you know it. If a player is slower&not good on the ball, take that into consideration before he receives the ball.

-Again, if your player makes a mistake, try to focus on what you could have done better. I don't mean to absolve this game, but I just see so many people complain about situations where they also made a mistake. The only way you'll get better is by accepting that this is just the way the game is and trying to adapt to it. Also, as I said earlier, once you start raging, you have lost the game, so try to stay as calm as possible (which can be hard, I know).

Hey you guys struggling with free kicks? Don’t worry EA is here for you, aim at the bottom middle, full power, red time it, boom

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 11:55 AM PST

Hey /r/Fifa, why are we okay with EA sweeping issues under the rug/keeping quiet?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 04:52 AM PST

Why aren't we more enraged? Why don't we demand more from EA seeing as Fifa IS a live service yet they aren't really doing more to make the game better when they happily suck our wallets dry?

There are plenty of issues which I feel is really controversial and some even illegal in some regards. I will highlight them below:

    1) Game's netcode benefits players with bad connection too much and doesn't take into account player's pings to servers to provide great connection

Take this post with a pinch of salt but we don't really have any information on how the netcode works. Fifa is by far the only game I play that you don't really know what's going on behind the scenes. Not enough dissection is carried out by the community.

    2) That pack probabilities is a lie

I unpacked at least 2 Cavani (88), 5 Visca (84 rated), 3 Delaney (82), 3 Politano (82), 3 Strakosha (82) but not even a single F.Mendy (80) , Sissoko (81), Wan-Bissaka(79). I have 800 players in my club and 100 on my transfer list, all duplicates (I don't do trading at all). Just to remind you, EA had to put this pack probability to appease countries. It seems like they are just putting it there for show. From what I can gather, the unpacking probability is constant changing and depends on the average price of the card on the market.

    3) Inputs not registering/delayed.

I don't even need to describe this to you guys. How many times did you do a simple ball roll, dragback or even a shot/pass and the game sometimes doesn't read the input or delays the action?

    4) Crappy servers that can't sustain it's performance. Tickrate is also inconsistent between providers

    5) Pro players avoiding each other during weekly Fut Champions and also using it to prevent others from having a fair chance at entering the qualifiers

NOTHING is being done to these players and EA hasn't even acknowledged that this happened. This is a major scandal if I may so myself. It undermines the spirit of competition as well as breaks their TOS.

    6) Where are the community managers? I've been on this sub consistently and it seems like they only appear when it's nearing a promo.

    7) Sliders/DDA swinging way too much and it's almost impossible to stop This clip of the game forcing the loss These are just some of the examples.

    8) You don't get a win when opponent forfeits on draw. I've played so many 30min matches that the opponent just quit when they conceded a late penalty/before it goes to pens wasting my time. Add insult to injury, you lose fitness and contracts as well as coin boosts if it's applied.

    9) Career mode being a broken mess even a few months after release. It's also just a badly copy pasted from Fifa 19.

    10) Issues from previous games brought forward year on year even after they were fixed previously. For example, this fucking infuriating inability to apply contracts/unable to search the transfer markets sometimes has been present since Fifa 18. It isn't fixed at all.

/r/Fifa, are we really that easy to appease? EA flashes new promos and SBC and all is forgiven and forgotten? Why are we like a bunch of amnesiacs?

Just a heads up. There seems to be a new glitch/exploit in Squad Battles.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 07:34 AM PST

As the title says, there's an exploit in Squad Battles that is effective at all difficulties. When you do it the AI effectively just stop pressing you as you stand still for about 3/4 of the game. Not sure if the mods will allow the instruction of how to do it though.

Edit: Mods haven't responded yet, so I'm going o share it. If it's illegal the post will probably be removed.

It's really simple. You basically have to to do fake shot stop. Don't move after stopping. The AI will just stand in place without tackling you. They will eventually start pressing at the end of the match. It make take a couple to times to do it. Not completing game breaking but, it's there none the less.

    That's it basically.

This "stumbling" animation that results in my player losing possession of the ball when fouled, yet no foul is given should NOT be in this game OR count as a foul

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 04:40 PM PST

It's utter bullshit. My player is through on goal, the opponent tackles him, clips him a bit and gets nowhere near the ball, my player, as a result of that, starts stumbling forward and loses the ball - play continues. My player was just fouled, lost the ball because of it, but no foul is given because he doesn't fall to the floor. This should not be in any game, let alone one that EA wants to be competitive.

Just happened to me twice in Champs, once in the 90th minute. At 2-2. In my opponent's box. And yes, you've guessed it - he scored on the counter and won the match, when I should've won it (or drawn if I missed the pen).

It's just another case of randomness on the game's part having a direct effect on one's performance.

Why Black Friday barely no longer has impact on FUT

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 08:59 AM PST

We keep reeding things like "the Black Friday crash is coming", or "the crash before the crash", or the pre-crash of the pre-crash... Yet it seems like most people ignore how much FUT has changed in the last few years.

Yes, Black Friday used to have a huge impact in FUT, specifically till FUT16. Why? Because Black Friday used to be the first time we had the opportunity to open "big" packs. We pretty much only had Divisions, a tournament cup once in a while and maybe a few 15k packs in the store.

Since then, think about everything that was introduced to FUT. Drafts, SBCs, Rivals, WL, Squad Battles, Objectives... you can get packs every week in every way.

So don't be fooled by this whole "OMG BLACK FRIDAY PANIC". It won't be much different from any rewards day or the begin of a promo where packs are opened.

    RTTF is terrible this year

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 10:36 AM PST

Papu Gomez is a horrific SBC, immobile is a poor selection (especially since there are so few in the team), team selections were poor in general because they are just increasing potential for already good cards to get better. VERY few pack SBCs for some reason and even the ones they gave out were mediocre to shitty packs. Sorry to say but I'm not a fan of this promo for this year and it was one of the best promos last year.

I guess there are a few positives, like RTTF Mbabu is pretty good for a weekly objective and Konate is good value IMO, but come on. A lot better could've been done. On to the next one.

A Few Icon Reviews (Giggs, Overmars, Pep, Kluivert, Raul, Hierro)

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 08:18 PM PST

Every time I buy an Icon I try to search for reviews so I figured I would give some feedback on the ones I have tried. I use a 4-2-3-1 wide and I'm a Gold 2/3 player on WL.

Ryan Giggs - Mid - 89 - LM I played about 50 games with Giggs and I liked him, but I don't think he fits the gameplay well. I don't use skill moves often so the 3* didn't bother me. The 2* WF did become an issue though. He's quicker than you think, but not fast enough to blow by people. Pinpoint passing, but crosses this year and pretty much useless. Cutting inside was possible, but shooting with the right foot was a no-go. Eventually upgraded to..

Marc Overmars - Mid - 88 - LW (used as LM) Currently using him with engine chem. He is an absolute monster, so fast and quick. Incredible ball control and just floats by defenders. His shooting is very good and the 5* WF means not having to worry about which foot the ball is on. Absolutely love playing this guy.

Pep Guardiola - Baby - 85 - CDM I have seen mixed reviews on the baby pep. I got him with my icon swaps and frankly, I couldn't be happier. I think he is sneaky good, very solid without being flashy. He just always seems to be in the right place and loves cutting out passes. I have him set to stay back and use Anchor chem. Great passing and has even scored a few goals when he gets forward, though it certainty isn't his strength.

Patrick Kluivert - Mid - 88 - ST Only had him for about 15 games. I just couldn't get into him, felt very clunky and never really where I needed him to be. Very likely just didn't fit my style. I went back to my Scream Gameiro and have had a lot better success with a smaller striker.

Raul - Baby - 86 - CF (used as CAM) Have about 75 games with him at this point, was using Maestro, but going to switch to Sniper. For me, he's a lot like Pep in that he's solid, but not too flashy. He does however have great finishing and 4* skills which I don't really take advantage of. Feels great on the ball and positioning is fantastic. Very happy, especially for a cheap Icon. Stamina is an issue though and I sub him out around 75th minute on average.

Hierro - Mid - 89 - CB Beast. Could honestly just end the review there. I have a Shadow on him and he's just so freaking quick. Laterally he is extremely quick and it's very difficult to get by him. I have him paired with Scream Pique and they make a great duo. I would say that he is likely my most important player.

    Hope this helps someone!
