    4222 - Elite Rank, Division 1 guide

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 11:03 PM PDT

    Hi all,

A few weeks back I posted a 41212(2) guide that was slightly different how to people typically play 41212(2).

    https://www.reddit.com/r/FIFA/comments/j7qwym/412122_d1_guide/

It received thousands of upvotes, and I received, (literally), hundreds of direct messages asking when I was going to release my guide to the 4222.

I didn't want to release a guide on the 4222 until I had played approximately 100 games or so using it, played a weekend league with it, and I felt comfortable that the tactics were refined.

    Well, here we are.

4222 has historically been my most used formation throughout my time playing FIFA. It's my favourite formation to play, by far, and my guides through the years on 4222 have been extremely popular and used at a very competitive level, supposedly.

Again, my setup isn't the same as you'd find on any of the "OMG BEST META CUSTOM TACTICS EVER THIS META THAT META YOUR MOTHER META META!!@ #" video's you'll come across if you do a little looking on YouTube.

    But it works.

    And it works very well.

I was unable to manage to finish Elite 1 this week. I failed at the last hurdle and couldn't quite get there, but it'll come once my team's at least half as good as the people that I am facing. I'm sure of it.

This guide will be split into four sections. Play Style, Custom Tactics, Player Instructions and Personnel.

    4222

    PLAY STYLE

Just like my 41212(2), I play this formation aggressively. You won't catch me sitting back with 70% possession and a couple of shots on goal. It's not how I play FIFA, and kill me if I ever do. Just like my previous guide, I aim to blitz my opponents and outscore them. Frequently, against opponents of similar skill, I will have games that end 5:3, 6:4 etc. Bad players get shit on. Big time. We will be creating chance after chance with this set up.

    CUSTOM TACTICS

    Defense:

Defensive Style: Press After Possession Loss

    Width: 5

    Depth: 7

We utilise Press after Possession loss as our goal, as always, is to win the ball back immediately in our own half after our attack breaks down. Or the AI blocks your shot. Which is every fucking attack, apparently.

We also play a fairly high depth, as this pushes our CDM's starting position higher up the pitch, to help bridge the gap that is in the middle of the park due to this formation not using a CAM. More on additional ways on how we work around this formational flaw later.

    Offense

    Offensive Style: Fast Build up

    Width: 3

    Players in Box: 4

    Corners: Personal Preference

    Free Kicks: Personal Preference

Fast build up is the key to countering these boring possession players with this formation. You could also use Long Ball, (and I did use that for some time), but found I preferred Fast Build up as it suited my aggressive style better. Fast Build up enables you to attack your opponents before their defensive shape is set and they have 11 men behind the ball letting the AI clog all the lanes. We're probably going to lose the possession game. Nearly always - but who cares about some random irrelevant number?

I set my width at 3 as I like my CAM to play more centrally in this formation. You can always take the ball wide with them, if you wanted to, but it's typically much harder to bring the ball back inside. Regardless, even on 3, they're still pretty wide; they just aren't hugging the side-lines.

Players in the box is set at 4, as that's enough to keep my CM's from bombing forward leaving me exposed to the counter. I don't want them in the box. I need them to stay outside the box - though, I'll go into more detail on how I set my CDM up later. If you start throwing stupid amounts of numbers into the box and it just invites the AI to track your players in there, and before you know it it's blocked shot simulator 21. Yeah, nah. Fuck that.

I also set my corners and free kicks to 1, and 1, as I find I get countered too easily when I start bumping this up to almost little benefit to myself. I absolutely concede more from counters on my own corners than I score myself. 100%

    PLAYER INSTRUCTIONS

If nothing is mentioned, it is because the instruction is left as default

    LB/RB

-- Stay Back While Attacking, Overlap.

Unlike my 41212(2) guide, I do not need my full backs to assist me in build up. I keep them back in this formation, as my CAM provide me with the necessary width to spread out my opponents AI defenders and free up the middle of the pitch. I use Overlap so that when I am chasing the game, I can activate D-Pad tactics for fullbacks to join the attack, and they will hug the side-lines pushing my CAM very central. But I only use this when I am chasing the game and desperate; or if my opponent is terrible and I am trying to get a quick cricket score to encourage a rage quit.

    CDM

-- 1x Cut Passing Lanes, Stay Back While Attacking, Cover Center

-- 1x Cut Passing Lanes, Balanced, Cover Center

I use my true CDM on Stay Back instructions, and my Box to Box midfielder on Balanced. I want my box to box midfielder to have high attacking WR (H/H preferably), so that he will push forward behind the strikers creating a pseudo-CAM. This guy is often my central passing option after I venture down the wings and he creates a nice little passing triangle from the wings. CAM -> CDM -> Through ball to ST.

    CAM

-- Free Roam, Get into the Box for Cross

I use Free Roam here, as when I utilise Free Roam, they move into nice pockets just outside the box - rather than sitting stagnant on the wings doing not much of much. Don't worry, Free Roam doesn't mean they will run all over the pitch causing havoc; it just means they get a little adventurous from their starting position. They'll still be mostly around where they would be with Free Roam turned off. I just use it as I feel they get a little more involved in the build up.

Get into the Box for Cross is used as when I am bombing down the wing with my CAM, the opposite CAM takes up positions in the box for either a sweaty dog-shit goal, or a rebound from a shot. Hey, I don't like playing this way, but needs must sometimes. I don't look for it, but if it's there, I will take it. You'd be stupid not to. Your opponent is likely looking for it for 90 minutes, AND taking it. So yeah, fuck em'.

    STRIKERS

-- 1x Get in Behind, Stay Forward, Stay Central

-- 1x Come Back on Defence, Balanced.

Some people swear by False 9 instructions on one of your strikers, but you don't know the beauty of Come Back on Defence until you've tried it. It offers the same benefits of F9, but more.

The issue with False 9 is that your F9 Striker will hover around acting like a CAM and it kinda defeats the purpose of a dual Striker formation. You may as well whip out the 4231 as it's effectively just the same shit.

With Come Back on Defence your ST will bridge the gap between your Strikers and CDM when you immediately will the ball back, BUT, once you have the ball and start your attack phase he will bomb forward and take up his position as a Striker. The F9 doesn't do that. He chills in the middle almost acting like a midfielder. Your Come Back on Defence Striker is basically just an immediate central outlet after you win the ball back.

Sounds contradictory, I know, but by utilising those instructions, you're effectively playing 4231 on Defence, then switching to 4222 on offence.

    PERSONNEL

    Defenders

Best you can afford, link up with. Usual suspects here.

    CDM

1x Pure CDM - Zakaria, Partey, Kante, Casemiro

1x Box to Box - Valverde, De Bruyne, Renato Sanches, Pogba (I know he is H/M, but he's a big bastard)

    CAM

I use wingers here, as their stats are far better suited for the role than a traditional CAM like KDB, Reus or Fernandes. Any Winger with plenty of pace, good passing and decent finishing. Sane, Hazard, Moura, etc. all work well in this role. A Decent weak foot is also somewhat important here, as it offers you the necessary flexibility when you cut inside and shoot/finesse or cross from the wing.

    ST

1x Pure Striker - Werner, Lewandowski, CR7, etc

1x CAM style play making Striker with good STA (unless you plan to sub him off). Griezmann, Firmino, etc all work well here. It isn't necessary for them to be more like a CAM, but it doesn't harm. You can just as easily get away with any 2 decent Strikers here.

    CONCLUSION

As mentioned earlier, 4222 has always been my favourite formation. It took a little to tweak it to how I like it, but I got there in the end. This isn't definitive, and patches, new player releases etc, can all change how this plays out. But for now, it works really well, and so far I haven't come across any woeful formation match ups that make me want to switch to something else.

I tried all the big boys and Cristiano is the best by a distance

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:10 PM PDT

I wanted to try the big four early in the game, so although it's cost me some tax I've played 30 games with Mbappe, Neymar, Messi (each one separate spells) and tonight 5 with CR.

Worth saying that it's clear why Messi is several hundred thousand coins less. He just doesn't have the presence or magic of the others.

Neymar is comfortably the most incredible on the ball, but as I'm a mediocre div 4 player and not great at skills he is wasted on me. Still an absolute banger in front of goal.

Mbappe is super explosive and capable of rescuing a game on his own, although finishing can be hit and miss.

The only way I can describe CR7 is it feels like you are playing mystery ball when the shooting and dribbling boosts are on. If you accelerate out of a skill move in to the opponents box, he is so strong and sturdy that half a glimpse of goal, and it's net. No joke he just netted me 20 goals in 5 games, and single handedly helped me beat opponents better than me.

In my opinion the order of greatness then year is CR7 > Mbappe = Neymar > Messi.

If you can gather the coins, he is on another planet.
