FUT Showdowns is the most underutilized concept in the game mode.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 01:35 PM PST

EA need to understand we play this game because we love football, not because we like FIFA in particular. There isn't a better thing than linking the game with real life eventa and pushing that experience to the maximum. That's basically what I think "live" cards do.

Now, I really like the idea behind OTW, HL and now WIF, but there is something about the Showdown players that just hits a bit different. It's a one off thing where you become the craziest supporter of a certain team, that you've never paid too much attention to, just because of a FUT item, which in most of the cases is pretty good let's admit it.

I really think they're missing the trick here, as with the amount of derby games we have on a regular weekly basis, we could have at least one Showdown per week, which would both give us new and interesting players and also take coins, fodder, etc. away, which would eventually benefit EA themselves.

    First impressions on PIM Puyol.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:14 PM PST

Completed his SBC solely because he was one of my favourite defenders over the past 2 decades, alongside Cannavaro and Maldini.

In total, I spent about 60k coins, with the rest coming from the fodders I had left over after doing the Icon Player Picks.

Just for perspective, here are some top CBs I've used this year: RTTF Varane, Base & Mid Desailly, Base Maldini, Base & Prime Cannavaro (waiting for his PIM SBC to drop), TOTY Ramos (still in my team), Base Carlos Alberto, Mid Blanc, Base Rio Ferdinand, IF Walker, IF Gomez and all that jazz.

So, I did Puyol's SBC to replace Prime Hierro in my team as the CCB in a 352. He's flanked by Mid Desailly and TOTY Ramos.

First off, I'm gonna address the elephant in the room and tell you right off he's not as slow and clunky as his stats suggest. I mean, I already knew this before doing the SBC because I've used Baresi before, and the thing with these players is their height (or the lack of it) offsets the average pace, poor balance and agility.

Of course, he's no Prime Cannavaro, but he feels very similar to TOTY Ramos in that sense. A tad slower, but he's very responsive.

Now, on to his defensive abilities. I don't know what else to tell you, he's just a proper, proper destroyer. He doesn't go into tackles with a nudge, he doesn't just attempt to stick a foot in. He basically attempts to break the opponent in half by ramming into them. Very similar to TOTY Ramos too. His tackles are extremely strong and assured, and 9 out of 10 times he will retain possession after winning the ball (FS Tapsoba owners, you know what I'm talking about).

His defensive positioning is top notch, and this is where I find that he's better than Ramos. I think it's the work rates, but Puyol doesn't actually need that much pace because he's always at the right place at the right time where else Ramos plays like a CM most of the time and I have to manually drag him back lol.

His stocky body type is more of a strength than a weakness, because his physicals are insane, and when he starts shielding the ball, there's no taking it from him.

The biggest drawback of this card is his close control of the ball. He takes really heavy touches even when not under pressure, but it's something I can overlook because I don't dribble much with my CBs. This is where Ramos trumps him completely. Also, even though he has the Power Header trait and great jumping and heading stats, his height means you won't be scoring much with him from corners.

Also to nitpick, I've no idea why he does not have the Leadership trait. He has been one of the most iconic captains over the past 2 decades alongside Maldini, Zanetti, etc. What a joke.

All in all, I'd give this card 9/10 for the price of the SBC. You must think I'm mad for comparing him to TOTY Ramos but honestly, I have both of them and at times during the game I wasn't even sure if it was Ramos or Puyol that left Mbappe flying to the sidelines.

I'm at 1800+ SR by the way, and I finish G1 in WL if I bother completing all my games. If not, I usually stop at G2.

    Happy to answer questions.

96 agility, 96 reactions, 95 composure, 94 ball control, maxed out shooting. I hate this meta of body type depending on if they're good enough, Henry is another prime example. Come on EA , big opportunity to mix it up in fifa22.

My opinion on Managerial Masterpiece, I'd love to hear the community's point of view.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 01:33 PM PST

After spending 5 months building the "ultimate team" I am stuck here in march having to use a mediocre team for 30 games so I can unlock the only objective card that has mildly interested me in a while.

This whole mode is the opposite of what a game centered around building the "ultimate team" should be.

In my opinion a mode like World Beaters, which lets you use cards that are actually enjoyable to play with and progress through the game at the same time, shouldn't be neglected by EA.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:20 PM PST

Seriously, you can get 6 cards from 15 games of Managerial Masterpiece.

You can get LB, CB, LW, RW, CM and ST

There is a cheap Leroy Fer SBC for another CDM option.

There is a level 15 storyline card which has a decent pacy CB.

Right back - if you missed Klaiber like me you can still get RB Dumfries for not too much.

There have also been some great cards dropped like Boadu who is like Mbappe without the skills.

Goalkeeper I'm not sure there is a single special keeper so you might need to stick with a blue Onana.

The league isn't great for skillers so if you desperately miss the 5* you can get a decent Quincy Promes RTTF.

Initially I was going to do it for fodder because I skipped Robben and Klaiber, but I have decided why not switch the team up a bit.

Similar to FFS Cucurella, I'd love for all objectives to give players the choice on what mode they can complete them in.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 02:50 PM PST

Overall, I still firmly believe moving objectives into friendlies is an overwhelmingly positive move from EA for this year. However, particularly owing to their love affair with modes with severe rating caps (looking at you Managerial Masterpiece), I'd love to be given the choice as to where I can complete these objectives and unlock the cards. Cucurella allowed us to do squad battles or rivals, and I really liked that and would love to see Friendlies or Rivals being an option in the future. Personally, I did 95% of him in rivals, just went back to squad battles to finish the crosses (I think it was the crosses anyway) at the end.

Firstly, let me say I do understand that there are certainly merits to Managerial Masterpiece that mean I get why they've kept the 77 OVR cap. If you were new to this game, or just hadn't grinded/stored players from other leagues, the ability to go into a mode where you are protected from God Squads and can compete on a level playing field is excellent. I think back to last year, particularly trying to complete milestones (some clubs only had silver attackers and I needed goals in wins lol) in high level rivals, it was brutal. Your choices were either relegate to make it easier, suffer through hours and hours of getting brutalised by Mbappe/Neymar/top level icons while you try and cross it to some short, fat and slow striker, or simply not to do it. Having an arena where you're matched up against balanced squads is a major step forward imo, so that people who don't have a great set up that matches the requirements can still partake in that content.

However, there are times - take this Benedetto for example, Caputo was another one - where I'm over using these basic teams, and I'd love to use more of the players I've collected over the course of the year in unlocking him. One of the things I love about building my FUT club is building up strong squads in all the major leagues (and to a lesser extent nations) largely through objectives and a few SBCs. Currently, they're only really useful to look at this year! Where as previously they'd be rolled out to complete the next objective, this year I'm stuck going back to my 77 rated starter set ups over and over again. As I said, I completely understand the merits of keeping the cap because it makes the content accessible to all, so why not (like with Cucurella) let me take this set into rivals if I'm feeling up to it? Same objectives - win 15, score 30, assist 20, score a long range in 4, score a finesse in 6 - just have it in managerial masterpiece (or rivals). That way, this can be content pitched at multiple types of player (both the grinders who want to use all the players that their grind has earned them and the less grindy folks (I'm not going to call someone a casual - I don't want to get shouted at!!) who don't have the same set up on hand, but do want this particular card). I see absolutely no downside to this.

On a side note, it also would help reduce the 'debates' that have largely split this community this year, over rubber banding, golden goal, trading goals, whatever comes next, because it would allow people who do genuinely just want to play the game and experience their different squads to have a different arena to go to - you're not going to get golden goal in rivals for instance, because chances are you're just going to matchup someone chilling with their main team. I'm a big one for just play the game the way you want to and enjoy what you bought however you can, so I try never to get annoyed by players doing these sort of things, but I'm actually typing this after my current opponent went AFK after scoring an equaliser from kick off, from my kick off goal (oh EA lol) - it's currently minute 60. This happens a little too often for my taste, and I'd personally prefer going up against full teams with my objective squads if it meant avoiding this sort of thing - at least when my squads are up to scratch.

To bring this to a close before full time, like I said, I think there's a lot of good about managerial masterpiece to ensure content is available to pretty much whoever wants it. But as someone who left this sort of squad behind in week one, my experience would be greatly enhanced, now that we're in March, to be given the option as to go back into these 'safe' rating capped modes or to try my hand in rivals with all restrictions lifted, when looking to unlock a card like Benedetto. There's a lot good about the earnable content side of FUT this year, but one weakness I see is EA sometimes struggle to pitch content to multiple levels of the community simultaneously; in my opinion this very minor and easy change would help to remedy that.

It’s Incredible how much Body Type influences how a player plays

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 12:04 PM PST

Noticing a lot more recently that it's unique body type is what makes the OP players so OP (Mbappe, Neymar etc) and a lean body type on an attacker or an average on a defender can make or break a card. It's what gets them the better bounce of the ball, better dribbling, faster skills and responsiveness etc

A good example I've came across recently is Boateng moments compared to Marcelo What If. Both have great CB stats, but it's clear to see on paper Boateng is the far better option. Then when I tried them in game, Marcelo is streets ahead because he can actually run and turn, instead of acting like he's in quick sand all game, all because he has the Average not Stocky body type.

It's gotten to the point where I think all Stocky players are borderline unusable, which really shouldn't be the case in defence and that body type is one of t most important thing in the game, even over stats.

First FIFA since 1998 - my FUT review.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:28 AM PST

I was 50/50 on writing this Review/Guide :) I said if I could hit E3 I would so here I am! This is my first fifa game since 1998. I got it in late Oct and have played FUT a fair amount over the last 4 months and this is my review of the game and community etc (from the perspective of an outsider coming in). I'll also try to consider Casual and hardcore gamers and EAs POV. I also want to say I do not know everything and parts of this may be wrong / stupid (i've only been playing 4 months ;P)

    Game:

    Gameplay

    • Controls - I was actually surprised about the controls in this game. They force a a decent amount of skill to become really good. (right stick switching, button combos and even choosing the option for each action as well as what i consider both micro and macro play)
    • Game settings - I think game settings are overlooked by most fifa players, either they have a setup from years of playing or the settings are not explained in enough detail to give newer players the info they need to make the right choices. I think the game settings can have a MASSIVE impact on actual gameplay so it's important to tinker and see what works for you. I feel people may have a lot of frustration because they have the wrong settings. Below are a few pointers which i have learnt:

    • Passing Lock - Late / Early : The general consensus is late because you can change who your aiming to at the last second. I seriously think a lot of peoples "wtf" passes are because of this. When you press a pass button the pass is delayed due to the action of the pass. So you have up to 0.5 seconds to change your aim (skill move dependent) . The effect of this means if your passing lock is on late your aim is still active until that action has taken place. This means that if you then aim your left stick in any other direction (for example to start moving another player) then the aim will shift and the pass will not go where your aiming. Having this set to early means you switch earlier and can move the player your locked onto earlier. For me i followed the guides and set it on late but i have changed it to early and i feel i miss less passes because of it.
    • Right stick switching Player/Ball relative - Player relative as the ball moves too fast at times to be consistent. To be good consistency is key.
    • Auto-switching (Air / loose balls) - I had this on full manual for a while because i couldn't defend corners to save my life. Having it on manual taught me who to select.
    • Agile dribbling - Off - I want to determine what my players do when.
    • Camera Settings - Picking the right settings allow you be a micro or macro player. (I'll expand on this concept more). If you want to improve you should switch between co-op and tele broadcast to practice both. There will be a balance somewhere.
    • Passing - I explained earlier i feel why passes get misplaced. Another reason is the choice of pass. both through ball and normal pass have similar descriptions. The way i can explain passing is the following.

    • A Pass if player is static - all will go to the players feet.
    • A Pass if player is moving - Harder to explain but the ball will goto the players feet but the player will not have to break stride to receive the ball.
    • Y through ball. the ball will go ahead farther ahead of the player and roll to a stop so the player can run to it. The key difference between this one and the one above is that a Y ball goes further ahead of a running player. Learning when to press A or Y is a micro factor.
    • Overall i actually think passing is pretty decent. I still haven't grasp all of the passing (need to learn to double tap A more) but i think theres a huge amount of skill in learning when to do the right pass. I actually think this makes or breaks a lot of players and for both causal / hardcore players be either glorious or frustrating. I also think it's unfair to expect players to hit perfect balls all the time otherwise you would lose some realism.
    • Goalkeepers: - I think they suck. The main issue is due to the lack of animations so GKs end up doing weird shit or look stupid because the coding can't process the correct animation to dive at the right angle. This needs major work and there's no excuse for EA not to record say 20 more animations?
    • Foul system - It's awful. I think we can all agree on this. I can imagine it's really difficult to build a physics engine with interacting models which then also takes into factor the common sense of football so i bet it is really hard.. But i feel some of the AI I've seen in other games could do it (thinking Alphastar AI). For causal and hardcore players this is pain point but sadly we have to live it.
    • Skill moves - I think they great. Being able fake or turn a player from a skill move is brilliant. It also ups the skill curve in the game which i appreciate and i can imagine hardcore gamers also appreciate it. For EA it's a balancing game which i think they have generally got right (with patches)
    • Tactics / Formations - I'm annoyed i can't just pick any formation but i can understand the balance issues this would bring for EA. Overall I love the amount of tinkering, the amount of options etc.. I feel some of these also get overlooked but it does create variation and the option to be original outside of the meta. It's cool and I really think not enough people try new things with it. I have been messing about with man marking / aggressive interceptions on some players as it means they are closer and doing something rather than just standing around like lemons.
    • Physics engine - I think it's good enough. It can be a bit wack at times but all games have bugs and weird glitches. I'd say its comparable to rocket league which again is good enough
    • Realism / Arcade - I was wondering if this would be an arcade game or a realistic football sim. I think it kind of does both. I watch football matches in real life and i spot periods of play which look similar to fifa. City using team press vs gladback recently was one. West brom with 1 depth drop back vs united recently.. that being said the skill moves make it like an arcade game. i think it hits a good balance for EA to maximize the amount of casual and hardcore fans
    • Stamina – This is broken, It seems the lack of stamina doesn't affect defending players.. the stamina system could be re-worked to be amazing. You could have it so that as players get tired their stats degrade or they can't run as fast.
    • Micro / Macro Gameplay - Micro gameplay is the individual moves your player makes. Macro is the overall game management, the systems and styles etc. I think this game does a good job of allowing you to manage both on the fly. In the micro sense i can do a ball roll to shift an angle to slide in a path. In the macro sense i can pull players back, call players to me, change formations etc.. I actually think the macro side of the game even at the pro level is largely unexplored in terms of tinkering and I'm yet to see anybody go into the level of detail you find in other communities.
    • Overall - I think its really good, it's exciting and you feel great when you score an amazing goal. Likewise it sucks when you feel cheated. In that aspect it kind of does match football and I think a lot of people struggle and scream scripting when things don't go there way. Each WL is almost like a full football season and your going to have games where it feels like nothing goes your way.. that's football. I think part of the difference is that in real life the team dominating often has better players and in the game everybody has decent players that can score meaning the opponent only needs 1 chance and his Ronaldo or whatever will put it away.

    Progression

    • Pay2Win - This game has a pay 2 win factor. Not in the competitive pro scene but certainly for casuals. That being said i do think this is a small factor but one that could decide a game if both players are equal. This is a lot worse than most competitive games which have no pay2win content. unfortunately the "build your team aspect" defines this game and is exactly why in some cases it is partially p2w.
    • Promos and SBCs/ content - I see the community complain all the time about the lack of content which i find crazy. This is the only game i have ever played which has an almost daily content drop. It also has bi-weekly or monthly promos and seasons! The amount of content you get i have actually struggled to keep up with. That is why i don't understand the amount of hate and displeasure with every promo or release. I also think the promos and release do add decent progression to the game. For the casuals there is always an affordable player so they can feel a part of the promo. For the hardcore players there's 1 or two new meta cards each promo. For the average players there's a decent mid point. I think a lot of people will instantly say oh this promo has NOTHING for me but not every promo or SBC release is designed for you / your specific team. I think they do a decent job of releasing new / upgraded players at a varied pace for all kinds of teams. this is way better than any other game i've seen (even ones which release skins etc)
    • Power curve. - The slow drop of new meta players for each promo adds a decent staggered power curve. This is actually better than most games. I feel without spending money i've been able to keep up with the power curve just by doing SBC's and buying / packing players.
    • Misc items
    • Arena - The arena pisses me off. What's the point in practicing skills with a camera angel I'm never going to use? I would much rather use the game cam ( this is why i personally use squad battles as a training ground)
    • Squad battles - fun for learning the game and getting some early fut rewards. I use it to practice skill moves, try out tactics and players.. it's a decent addition and allows people to get free squad upgrades
    • Community - Loads of content. Loads of really awesome guides but i feel a lot of content creators seem jaded and negative about fifa and how it's not fun or this promo sucks etc... I wonder if that is fatigue from constant fifa but as a new player it still is exciting and fun. There also seems to be a whole stigma in this community blaming the game for mistakes and not yourself. I think that really holds people back from improving. I also think (maybe this is just because im on PC) that there's loads of wholesome activity, golden goal etc.. I've had games where we have both got the goals we need for whatever objective and we are taking turns to try and score with our keeper whilst their keeper chases you! Great fun.
    • Draft – People complain about the draft rewards but I think they are missing the point. The Draft mode lets me try players I could never afford. I've got the 94 Ronaldo in my current draft and getting to run about with him is cool 😊 the rewards are a bonus for trying new cool players.
    • Bugs – Still get a couple of game breaking bugs on PC. Sometimes when I lag spike my controller disconnects for like 2 min. I also had an issue with MSAA which caused me to crash at least 1 or 2 games during WL. I've fixed the MSAA glitch but I'll still loose like 5 goals per WL to the controller glitch.
    • Summary- Decent progression, lots of options / cool things to do and fun objectives.. Overall i think it's a good game and i'm really enjoying it and i do think it has a depth of skill comparable to other competitive games which i am far from mastering.

I think there's loads of different things to practice or try to do and EA are constantly giving you new things to the point where I can't keep up.

I also think people sometimes miss the point. The point of FUT is to build your individual ultimate team and part of the fun is slowly upgrading and building your squad. I assume you lose it when the next game comes out so just have fun with it.

If you've got this far my team I run a 3-5-2 with Rashford / Neymar up top. Messi at CAM. LM – Kurzawa – CDMs – Kante/Jones – RM – Rooney. 3 CBs – Mendy,Varane and Dest and then Obs at GK. I play balanced D, and fast build up on attack. I think the only reason I hit E3 this week was because I brought Rashford meaning I had 2 quality fast strikers up top for once and it meant in close games where I had lost before I was able to get a killer goal to seal the game. I also got lucky that I didn't crash and the controller glitch really only cost me 1 game lol.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my thoughts / review of this FIFA coming from somebody who hasn't played FIFA since 1998.

    PSA PC PLAYERS - Matchmaking

    Posted: 04 Mar 2021 06:33 PM PST

The game is not "dying" because you can't find a match. The game is broken on origin and you need to manually update the game. To launch the game after updating, you also need to go offline first so the play button isn't stuck on update. Matchmaking will be back to normal once you update.

This is the 2nd occurrence of this happening, so if you ever have trouble finding a match, do these steps to fix the game. EA needs to acknowledge and fix this issue

I reckon with 50-60 player picks you can basically do him for free or less than spending an extra 100k. I completely advise you to do this when fodder has calmed down. If you still have your 83+25/82+25/81+25 then send it tomorrow with team 2. I reckon it will be a lot better and team 2 is always better anyway. The only time it's been worse has been with future stars I think. As a Barca fan he'll be 100 percent being completed during the 57 days or some shit with undradeable duplicate fodder from player picks.
