30 Squad Weekend League! Part 1 (Friday Games)

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 05:34 PM PDT

As I mentioned in my r/FUT post last week, I did a 30 squad Weekend League this weekend. I've saved every objective card this year, and while I've been a bit picky on the SBCs I've done (I run a RTG), I've kept them all.

Highlights will come in a week or two (work's rather busy at the moment), but in the meantime, I figured I'd share my squads and a quick recap of each game.

So without further ado...here's my squads for Friday!

I wanted to be strategic with which squads I played when, and roughly go from my worst squad to best squad. However...the first 5 games of WL are random. So I decided to keep my Portsmouth FC squad and my Silver Stars for after that 5th game, where ELO would kick in and hopefully do me some favors.

    Game 1 - Libertadores (L 3-5 ET)

    Goals - Pavon Pavon Pavon

    Assists - Casco

    Libertadores

I definitely submitted many, many Libertadores cards into Player Picks during FUT Birthday, and really only had a skeleton squad...so many of these players were purchased and not first owner.

Went down 3-0 in the first half, but battled back (With an insane 30 yard free kick from Pavon!) to force extra time. Despite the loss...this gave me confidence for the weekend as a whole.

    Game 2 - Turkey (L 3-5)

    Goals - Yazici Yazici Yilmaz

    Assists - Yilmaz Yilmaz Yokuslu

    Turkey

Originally I wasn't going to do a Turkish squad...but after looking through my Club and realizing I had Yaziki, Kabak, Soyuncu and Çalhanoğlu...I thought what the hell. The rest of the squad is pretty bare bones, but that's alright. Yaziki was surprisingly good for such a cheap SBC (only reason I did him was to get rid of some dupes).

Again went down by 3 early, but pulled it back to 4-3 in the 85th minute before giving up a late sealing goal in the 90th.

    Game 3 - Ireland (W 4-1)

Goals - Hendrick Hendrick Curtis Horgan

Assists - Connolly Connolly Hourihane Manning

    Ireland

My first win! With a squad I did not expect. Just as with the Turkish squad, the only real reason I did this one was because of the Milestone players we got. The lack of skillful players (except McGeady of course) took a bit to get used to, but this was a fun team. Hendrick's finishing was quite good!

    Game 4 - Liga NOS (L 1-5)

    Goals - Marega

    Assists - Waldschmidt

    Liga NOS

Outside of the silver teams, this was probably the worst squad I used, and it showed. Waldschmidt was okay, but that's about it. I really regret not doing the Filipe Anderson SBC...but c'est la vie. Forgettable game where I was outclassed. Was lucky to get a goal.

    Game 5 - CSL (L 3-5)

    Goals - Bakambu Martins Eder

    Assists - Martins Viera

    CSL

Another tough squad, especially once you get past the Strikers. Could've certainly upgraded the defense a bit, but that kinda defeats the purpose. Also never had that Rulebreakers Talisca...probably wouldn't have mattered. Defense was the problem here.

    Game 6 - Portsmouth FC (L 4-6)

Goals - Marquis Marquis Harrison Harisson

    Assists - Harness Harness Harness

    Portsmouth FC

5 games in, with a -3 ELO, I figured would be the ideal time to use my Silver squads. The squad matchup seemed to reinforce that, as I was playing a team with mostly rare golds. Sadly...his IF Lozano just ran right past my favorite club's mediocre defense. I was happy to score a couple goals though, and though I never really had a shot to win, I was glad to keep this within 2.

    Game 7 Silvers (L 2-4)

    Goals - Weah

    Assists - Paulo Otavio

    Silvers

Before even starting the weekend, I figured if I timed this game right, I'd have a real shot to win with this squad. These Silver Stars are cracked, and the FUT Birthday Brazilians means Chemistry was much easier. Weah's honestly incredible, and is so fun to use. I had this game tied at 2 in the 60th minute, but gave up goals in the 70th and 86th. Disappointed I didn't win this one.

    Game 8 - African Nations (W 8-1)

Goals - Martins Martins Bakambu Bakambu Wamangituka Bolasie Bolasie Simon

Assists - Martins Martins Martins Bakambu Bakambu Bakambu Bakambu Simon

    African Nations

This squad was so much fun to build! I was thrilled to get that Storyline Bakambu to link with the other DRC players, and the FUT Birthday Bailly was perfect. Packing Birthday Simon to replace his Gold was even better. I probably could've even done a second Africa squad with the Moroccans and Angolans.

The -5 ELO definitely helped here, and I was able to win this one easily. Bakambu and Simons were much more noticeable in this game than the CSL one...probably because of a much stronger midfield.

    Game 9 - 'Round the World (L 4-5)

Goals - Wood Marquinhos Kimmich Kimmich

    Assists - Jesus Jesus Kimmich

    'Round the World

Full Disclosure! I messed this squad up! The plan was at least one player from each continent, but I forgot Africa. I changed my mind halfway through the build and put Davies in Off Chem, and forgot to take out the Americans for Telles/Bailly/Mendy (you can even see them on the bench). I realized once I got in game and subbed in Bailly for Long.

Anyways...I expected Wood and his lovely 66 pace to be a huge detriment...but he actually banged in my first goal and was surprisingly clinical. TOTY Kimmich was, as always, a monster in the Midfield. This game was tight, but I couldn't overcome the two goal deficit late...my 4th goal came in the 87th.

    Game 10 - USA (W 4-3)

Goals - Weah Weah Pulisic Pulisic

    Assists - Weah Nagbe Dest

    USA

This was a squad I was quite excited to use, being an American. Was thrilled to pack Dest during Future Stars...wish I had nabbed Reyna too but I've had plenty of pack luck this year, so I shouldn't complain.

Win #3 of the weekend came a bit lucky frankly. My opponent got a straight Red late in the 1st half when the game was tied 2-2. I went up 3-2 and he tied, before I finally secured the winner in the 74th minute.

I'm far from an amazing player, but I do finish Gold 2 consistently. I ended Friday 3-7. If I'm 100% honest, even with the poor squads, I was a bit disappointed in the record after these first 10 games. I was in every game but one, and thought with a bit more focus I should've been able to steal at least one more win. But I was having so much fun, that the record didn't really matter in the end.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post with Saturday's 10 games and 10 squads...we cleared out a bunch of the stinky ones early on while my ELO was low!

SB objectives made me appreciate my job.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:16 PM PDT

Simply put, squad battle objectives, specially really long ones (really? 8 matches, not even 7 so I don't have to apply contracts..) are as tedious as a job, and a bad paying job at that.

I recently synched my laptop to play my playstation remotely, so I could grind squad battles every time I had a break... but after nearly falling asleep, turns out that counting screws for a 100 item purchase order is way more entertaining than this bullshit. Heck I could even mix it up and change my counting techniques, setting challenges and rewards for not mixing or screwing anything up.... so yes, counting screws is more fun than SB.

And I actually like the game, and get a blast out of it playing online, but SB IS NOT FUN, no league pack is worth this chore.

Idea - have short scenarios as an option instead of squad battles.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:14 PM PDT

Wouldn't it be much better, if you had the option to play scenarios instead of squad battles, they could vary it from historic matches like you're Liverpool v Milan, you're 3 down at half time versus the Milan team, or united v Bayern, 1 down in the 88th minute and then mix it up by adding in recent matches, like when Bayern had a man sent off recently v Stuttgart on 12 minutes but scored 4 before half time. Your objective is to start on the 12th minute a man down and get 4 by half time.

It would be shorter objectives with a bit more added fun. I remember one of the champions leagues games years back had something like this and I loved doing the challenges.

Modern 4-3-3(5) Guide - Make FIFA Fun Again

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:03 PM PDT

I've been trying (and struggling) to create a 4-3-3 system since FIFA 21 was released. Judging by the lack of people I see playing 4-3-3 online, it seems that I'm not the only one having trouble.

After months of effort, I have now created a system that I am extremely happy with. This system allows me to play quick tiki-taka football, to counter attack, and to break down deep blocks with creativity and movement.

    The System

All instructions are default unless stated otherwise.

    Formation: 4-3-3(5)
Defence: Press after possession loss; width 5; depth 8
Offence: Long ball; width 7; players in box 5

GK: sweeper keeper, comes for crosses
    RB: stay back while attacking
    CB: default
    CB: default
    LB: default
CDM: stay back while attacking, cover centre
    RCM: get forward
    LCM: default
RW: get into the box for cross
    CF: default
LW: get into the box for cross

Note: If you want your right back to be the more attacking one, feel free to swap the instructions of the RB/LB and LCM/RCM.

Using 'Long ball' is the key here. Ignore the name - we're not hoofing it long. Using 'Long ball' simply helps initiate player movement and makes your players' positioning more attacking and aggressive. After playing on 'Long ball', you realise how static the AI movement is on 'Balanced'.

The combination of 'Long ball' and leaving most player instructions on 'default/balanced' means you have lots of movement into spaces, wherever they may be. It allows your players to adapt to different situations, instead of always forcing them to stay wide, cut inside, get in behind, etc.

This is vertical tiki-taka. We're passing the ball quickly, but not passing for passing's sake or hoarding possession. We're allowing players to get forward quickly, while offering multiple passing options and opportunities for creativity. Think Leeds under Bielsa.

    The High Line
If you don't want to play 'Press after possession loss' and a high line, change the defensive style to 'Balanced' and the depth to 6. It's not essential to the system, but it works well.

    The Right Back
We have the right back on 'Stay back while attacking' for two reasons. Firstly, it helps prevent counter attacks, as most of your opponents will use two striker systems, so having three players back means you're 3v2 in defensive transitions. Secondly, because 'long ball' is such an aggressive attacking mentality, if left on 'default' your fullbacks will bomb forward when building up from the back. By setting the right back to 'stay back while attacking', he'll sit deeper deeper and provide another passing option.

    Holding On to a Lead
I have a second variation of the tactic for seeing out tight games. I change to 'Balanced' attacking mentality and have both fullbacks on 'stay back'.

    Attacking & Building Up Play

When you win the ball back, you'll have opportunities to counter attack, but if the counter isn't on, keep the ball moving. On 'Long ball', your CF, LW, RW, LCM and RCM will make runs forward. These runners will attract markers, destabilising your opponent's defensive shape and creating gaps.

Play one and two-touch, but don't be afraid to mix the rhythm of your passing up to make it less predictable. Hold on to the ball occasionally to draw your opponent out (especially if he's blocking passing lanes with his CDM) or to wait for runs.

Use your CDM to recycle possession. If you're stuck down one avenue, play it back to him and start again.

Look to switch the play and use the full width of the pitch. The 4-3-3(5) will naturally create triangles all over the pitch, so you should always have at least one pass on.

When building up play from the back, if the easy pass into your CDM is blocked, look for the ball into your CM or winger. Your opponent will have a difficult time blocking both of these options.

Always look for the pass into the CF. I love the CF's movement in this tactic. He'll come deep to receive the ball and also run in behind, almost playing like a CAM and ST hybrid.

If you're not used to playing the 4-3-3 it may take you a while to become familiar with the players' positioning and movements. After a while, you can almost play passes without looking as you'll instinctively know where they're going to be.

    Common Attack Patterns

Here are some common attack patterns with this tactic:

    • Your midfielder dribbles forward with the ball, attracting pressure from a defender, creating a hole in the defence. The CF runs in behind and is played in.
    • The ball is with your LW, who attracts pressure from the right back. Your LCM runs into the vacated space, between the RB and RCB. Same with the RW and RCM.
    • The CF comes deep and is passed the ball. The CMs make runs in behind.
    • The CF attracts the opposition's CBs (either by running in behind or by having the ball in front of the defence). The RCM runs in behind, pulling their LB inside. The RW is now completely unmarked on the right flank, and can be played in on goal.

As you can see, there are quite a few ways to create chances. Not to mention you can also counter attack with wingers, play one-two's between the CF and onrushing CMs, and create overloads on the left flank with the overlapping LB and LW.

The best thing about this tactic is that you don't need to 'glitch' your way through a defence or use the bridge/directional nutmeg to score goals. You can play more realistic, varied, attacking football.

    Defending

The CDM is the key man when defending. Manually switch to him and drag him back into position to prevent counter-attacks. Move him in between your opponent's strikers to prevent them from playing one-two's. This is necessary because midfielders are useless at tracking back in FIFA 21. Once he's back in position, press actively with your other players.

I like to play 'Press after possession loss' as the 4-3-3 is a great system for pressing and winning the ball back high up the pitch. When I lose the ball, I try to win it back as quickly as possible. Failing that, I press my opponent in order to slow down their counter-attack, while the rest of my team gets back into shape.

Playing with a depth of 7+ means you'll have the automatic offside traps and your players will engage higher up the pitch.

    Player Archetypes

    • CF - The star of the team. Plays as a false 9, but will make runs in behind. Think Messi, Neymar, Benzema, Cruyff. Needs to be a good passer, dribbler, shooter and ideally be strong with both feet. Good physicality is beneficial. Ideally H/L, H/M or M/L work rates.
    • RWF - The 'true' winger. Should be right footed. 4*+ weak foot is a massive bonus. It makes you less predictable as you can cut inside or go down the outside. Ideally H/L or H/M work rates. E.g. Diatta, Portu, Lozano.
    • LWF - The 'inside forward'. He'll play wide, but the presence of the overlapping left back will cause him to come inside occasionally. Should be right-footed to take advantage of this. 4*+ weak foot is a massive bonus. Ideally H/L or H/M work rates. E.g. Insigne, Mane, Reus, Neymar, Sterling, Pereyra, Deulofeu, Carrasco.
    • LCM - The box-to-box work horse.. Needs to be able to defend, create and attack. Ideally H/H work rates. E.g. Vidal, Renato, Paulinho, Kessie, Nainggolan, Llorente.
    • RCM - The attacking midfielder. Should be a goal-scoring threat. Feel free to play attackers here. Ideally H/H or H/M work rates. E.g. Aouar, Kulusevski, Gnabry Freeze, Bernardo Silva, Mkhitaryan, Bruno Fernandes.
    • CDM - The pivot. Think Busquets at Barcelona. Needs to be defensively solid, composed on the ball and a good passer. Dribbling (with agility and balance) is a big plus, as it helps them wriggle away from pressure. Marco Verratti is one of the best players I have used here. I like players with a high aggression stat, as they bite into tackles. Ideally M/H or M/M work rates. E.g. Busquets, Verratti, Lucas Leiva, Emre Can, Fabinho, Partey. Avoid pure destroyers with low passing/dribbling (Keane, Gattuso, etc.)
    • LB - The attacking fullback. Will get up and down to support attacks. Some dribbling and crossing ability is needed. Ideally H/H work rates. E.g. Acuna, Sinkgraven, Alba.
    • RB - The more defensive fullback. Having someone slightly larger here is a bonus. E.g. Klaiber, Ansaldi, Florenzi, Bellerin.
    • CB - Must have decent pace. I like at least one to be dominant aerially. It is preferable to play a left footer at LCB and a right footer at RCB, as this makes playing out from the back easier. I.e. A left-footed LCB can shield the ball from the opponent's attacker and play into the LB or LCM.
    • GK - It's not essential, but I like to user keepers with good kicking. Ederson's is incredible. This helps when being pressed, as he can ping a ball our to the wingers/fullbacks. E.g. Neuer, Ederson, Alisson, ter Stegen.

Essentially, we're looking for 'total footballers', so every midfielder and attacker should have good technical skills and have at least 4* weak foot.

Your most important players are the CF and your CDM. They CF needs to create and score. The CDM will win the ball back and control the tempo of the game. The two CMs are the next most important players.

I like to have attackers with the 'finesse shot' trait, as it helps when scoring from outside the box or when cutting in from the wing.

    Conclusion

Remember: FIFA is a game. Winning is fun, but playing varied, attacking football is fun too. With this I hope to combine the two.

Given all the recent developments in football, it's nice to remember why we love this beautiful game. I hope you enjoy using this system as much as I have!

41212 Narrow is really balanced this year

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 07:06 PM PDT

I have never been a huge fan of 41212 Narrow in previous Fifa, it always felt boring and repetitive with your attacking mainly relying on quick 1-2 between your front 3.
That's probably the reason why I waited so long to test it, but oh boy, it has been a revelation and I'm enjoying Fifa again. I barely give any instruction, except for a Stay-back CDM(and even that is probably not needed if you have a high/med or high/low CDM).
Having attacking fullbacks is a must, a lot of your width will come from them.
Your CMs need to be good box to box, preferably 1 High /High and one Medium/High.
What really sets this formation apart for me is the ability to have 2 options for a pass everywhere on the pitch, you create nice triangles to counter high pressure. You obviously are going to concede some goals, especially as I like to play on 7-8 depth. But it makes for fun games and force you to be very proactive in defense with you CBs and your CDM often defending 1v1. It' s by far the most fun and balanced formation I used this year, and I tried every 3atb alternatives. Only downside is when your opponent go full attack especially in 442 with attacking full backs. I went from 5-2 at the 74th minute to 5-7 at the 90th minute when someone did that and learned my lesson. But all in all, great formation for the 15 first games of WL, went 10-0 with it and just started to struggle a bit against Elite players. Give it a try if you are in a rut.

EA need to do their job so a switch of focus on PC doesn't cost you a game.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 01:43 PM PDT

It's such a lazy way around preventing cheating.

So many apps can randomly pop up and cause you to disconnect. E.g. for work I use Citrix. No matter how many times you close that, it still asks if you want to update.

It prevents us from replying to to messages on PC (which as a former Xbox player, i used to do mid-game without pausing as long as it was quick). It prevents switching songs. Prevents switching tv shows etc...

What if there's something unexpected? e.g. unprompted updates, a driver crashing for something unrelated like a drawing tablet.

I can't even count the amount of games this has cost me that i've been in the lead for this year since switching to PC. The most recent? 5 mins ago Origin asked if I wanted to update Apex whilst mid-game.

Yeah, EA, do your fucking job for once. I literally can't think of any other PC game that does this.
