Player picks have NOT been nerfed

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 03:43 PM PDT

I keep seeing YouTubers and commenters on every FIFA related site (including this one) moaning about how the new player picks have been nerfed. Do people not realise this is an 80+ pick and not 81+? There are so many 80 rated players that are going to reduce the weighting of high-end players. Not to mention the fact that this SBC is cheaper than the 81+ pick. I know the 81+ picks are still fresh in our memory but it's surely common sense that these ones were always going to be worse.

TOTS Hughes Review (Spoiler: He's a Man)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 04:17 PM PDT

I'll keep it short, because not much needs to be said.

WL finish: Elite 3, while not the best finish I've had it's still good this time of the year.

    Position: CDM in a 4-1-2-1-2(2)

Team: CR7 (Gold), Rooney EOAE, Birthday Bernardeschi, FB Rabiot, Future Stars Curtis Jones (CM), TOTS Hughes, Rico Henry, Van Dijk (Gold), TOTS Santos, and Future Stars Dalot (RB).

General impression: He's a god damn man. I thought Leroy Fer was the best CDM in the game, but then this guy comes around. He was running through everyone, making key passes, and intercepting passes he had no business getting.

I bought him for 42k yesterday, and while he is inflated right now due to the Sarr SBC he is 100% worth it. He plays well above his stats, genuinely. He was the star of this WL, immense every single game. And being one of what feels like the last people on the planet that don't play full backs and center back and CDM, he definitely held his own.

Rating: 10/10, he literally did not let me down once.

What changed? A month ago I only played people in my state, now I'm only playing Mexicans.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 09:00 PM PDT

I just played a full WL where every single one of my games either had a Mexican national team, domestic league badge, Spanish team name or Spanish GT. I live in Minnesota?

What changed? A month ago I'm playing the same people over and over and having crisp gameplay because I'm playing people in Minnesota or within the region at least. Now I'm pinging at 40-50 and playing only foreigners?

What gives EA? What changed a month ago?

Anyone else just baffled by some of the opponents you're connecting to given your own location?

In gold players packs, you have a higher probability of pulling a team of the season then an 88+ gold player

The biggest issue that FIFA has for years now is just one: consistency

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:20 AM PDT

You can break down almost every gameplay-problem in fifa to some kind of consistency.

    1. passing. It's just terrible. Passing feels completely random. Sometimes you can play the craziest 180 no scope passes over 50m with a player that has 60 passing, sometimes your prime moments Pirlo can't pass the ball over 5m to the next players thats just standing there. That's why people are avoiding passing as much as possible which then takes away any realism.
    2. dribbling/tackling. Maybe even worse than passing. There's absolutely no consistency. Every player can just glitch through every defender and theres nothing you can do about it.I'm scared every time I'm tackling someone because theres a chance that he will just warp through me and has a free goal. Some ppl say it comes from the animation-based tackling-system, idk. I just know that it's god aweful.
    3. Defensive AI. Also crazy inconsistent. Sometimes, defenders will block away every shot and it's almost impossible to get through (except when youre making use of point2). But sometimes, the AI just stops working. Defenders just refuse to join the defense, stand there like the had a stroke and can't control the easiest ball. Best thing to do is not using tackling buttons at all and just walk into the striker using LT/RT. Think about it how crazy that is.
    4. Shooting/Goalkeepers. Thats maybe a minor thing, but it's still very random. There are certain angles that just work very well every time while some angles or situations are completely random. Everything between ripping the net with 66 shooting gold Adama and missing the empty goal with prime puskas is possible.
    5. General meaning of stats. It's just weird. It's TOTS and ppl use fricking gold Mendy as center back and hes much better than PIM Puyol. That alone tells the whole story. Players just dont play according to their stats. Most people would still prefer a gold neymar over a TOTY Lewa, even if he had 99 in all stats, neyney or mboop would probably still be better.

There are many others, but it just goes through the whole game and honestly, who wants to watch an "esport" where the world champion could be decided because of bugs and glitches? As long as the game is that inconsitent, it will never be taken seriously as an esport. Which is really sad, also for the pros that are really good in what they do, but you just cant compare it to real esport.

Sorry for the longer post, hope you enjoyed the rant.

    80+ Triple Upgrade! (Repeatable)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 10:01 AM PDT

Came back to FUT after a long break because I sucked, and I instantly remembered why I left. A few questions:

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 03:57 PM PDT

This could be a rant post but there's no point because that's boring. Instead I want to ask a few questions because I can't get into the mechanics of the game anymore, I was Div 1 in FIFA 16 (a long time ago I know) but I've been worse every year and this year is no exception, so here goes:

    • How do I turn instantly around an opposition player when they are tight to me and I am receiving the ball with my back to them? This seems to happen against me a lot, but when I try to turn they can tackle me no problem. I usually can't even take a touch before I get muscled off the ball, I have to one touch pass most of my goals.

    • Why are so many goals (that I score AND concede) just through balls straight down the channel/between the CBs? I'm not even controlling the CBs before it happens so I can't be moving them out of position surely? Same goes for my opponent, I can't stand scoring or conceding 'Press Y to be 1 on 1' goals unless I've run my CB out of course.

    • How do you do this little dribbling thing at the edge of the box ~20-25 yard from goal where you shuffle backwards and forwards and side to side? If I move my CDM to you you just walk around the AI CB, if I jockey my CB in front of you while my CDMs stand there with their thumbs up their arses, you can eventually find a cheap through ball or quick turn to get a shot away.

    • Are there any 'meta' formations and tactics? I have a decent squad but it just seems like my players stop running suddenly during counterattacks, or they tease a run into the channel and stop as soon as I pass it. I don't understand how opposition players can have 2/3 players around me all the time without being tired from constant pressure.

    increasing defensive control

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 08:55 PM PDT

i know at this point i'm beating the dusty skeleton of a horse that's long dead, but after a TOTS weekend where a lot of people seem to have had issues, i think it's a good window to talk about what i've felt for a while: defensive controls haven't been adapted to cope with the continued addition of offensive mechanics.

each year they introduce new offensive things like controlling layoff runs, second player movement, bridge dribbling, touch control, along with the various skill moves (and nerfs/buffs to them) etc. in that span, we've still had generally the same wheelhouse defensively- stand/slide tackle, jockey, and the second player support. the only features that make any waves are things which we have to dig out during the cycle, ex. the few players who get boosted tackling animations based on body type, or this year with people plugging fullbacks as CBs. with that same wheelhouse there are the same complaints every year too: random tackling animations, 50/50s being more like 30/70s, and the ref calling every single touch a foul or penalty (this year in particular it seems everything is a foul).

in mid/high level play, games can be decided by exploiting one of these common complaints, and at times tactical play boils down to putting the opponent in situations where there is either an RNG chance- or there is literally no input that responds to the problem. whether it be the 40 yard through ball spam, or the run down the byline and send a laser guided pass into the box- there are several situations where no matter what defensive acumen you have, there is always a sprinkle of RNG which can lead to a goal.

a few small solutions ive thought about would be:

    1) using the triggers/bumpers as some sort of modifier for tackles. a major problem with tackling is that sometimes the animations are all over the place. you plan for a strong standing tackle across the opp but your player just sticks a limp leg out and bam, toast. having more direct control over the style of tackle could allow for a more predictable line of tackling animations, and let the defense plan the level of risk/reward. there could be a modifier for a risky "last ditch" ball clearing tackle (think a VVD-style long stretch) which if executed properly can stop a fast break- but lead to a card if mistimed. then there could be a more technical/finesse tackle which can lead to a high chance of winning and retaining possession (think a Kante-style surgical steal and quick counter), at the risk of whiffing and being easily out of position if missed.

    2) in game instructions for the defensive box considering we already have d-pad controls for offside trap, press, etc. it would be easier to implement. but this would allow for a more controlled response to the situations occurring in/around the defensive box, and reflect more real-life tactics. ex. if the opponent is bombing down the line, you can instruct your defense to quickly collapse into the box in expectation of the byline pass to the penalty spot, at the risk of being exposed by more traditional crosses or long shots after recycling possession. alternatively, you could instruct them to spread further out and block the crossing lanes/posts, in exchange for being vulnerable centrally.

both solutions aren't solve-all but the general idea is to give players more control over moment to moment defensive aspects to better matchup with the breadth of attacking mechanics.
