    20-4 FALSE 352/433 FULLBACK KILLER WL REVIEW - A lesson in exploiting opponent AI.

    Posted: 24 May 2021 04:21 AM PDT

    WARNING: LONG READ.

    I known about this formation/ tactic for a while and had briefly used it when Beckham was released last year, but I decided to revisit this formation this WL and it worked with great effect.

    This is how my team lines up in game;

    In game formation

    KEY TACTICS:

    CAM - BALANCED, GET IN THE BOX

    LM/RM (CHOOSE ONE) - STAY FORWARD, CUT INSIDE, GET IN THE BOX

    LM/RM (CHOOSE ONE) - COME BACK ON DEFENSE, GET IN THE BOX.

    To be self indulgent for a second - the idea behind what i wanted to achieve for this formation was during a game between Man United and Arsenal in an FA cup tie. Lukaku was played in a 4312 formation but was instructed to stay by the by line on the right - where Kolasinac is supposed to be. With Arsenal's fullbacks main strength being in attack this created a situation where Kolasinac had to make a decision; stay back to mark lukaku and neuter Arsenal's attacking threat, or to bomb forward which left the channel for lukaku to run onto. Ultimately, the latter occurred more often than not and Lukaku was given time and space to gather two assists and claim the MOTM. I think one of the commentators had claimed that the tactic was akin to 'cheating'. It's a game and situation that has stuck in my mind and I wanted to replicate in this game.

    So going back to the formation - i couldnt exactly replicate it in a 4312, but I managed to find a solution using the 352 as the in game formation. The basic principle for this formation is that you play with a front 3, but the formation is tilted that one of the wingers is hugging the sideline. You also have a screening 3 in midfield which would outnumber or at least match most formations to provide control. You basically play as a 433 in defense but a 352 in attack - allowing for the stability of 4 defence and 3 midfield but also having the attack capabilities of a 352.

    DEFENSIVE PHASE

    https://preview.redd.it/4t6lle3mg1171.png?width=476&format=png&auto=webp&s=e7bb499ee93cb437050b601e6abf233ac9e8ebb6

    When defending in this formation, you'll generally find yourself in a position such as the above, though with a few things to note. I play this formation with my RWB as my stay forward winger which means the striker would be my RS (Haaland) and my pseudo LW is my LS (PIM Klose). Also important thing to note is that my CAM (Muller) drops into the midfield and plays as the LCM in this formation. Lastly your RCB will move to RB. This is nothing special about this formation for defending in this formation but there is a lot of protection offered, especially if your CDM's and CM are good box to box with good defensive stats.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS AND REQUIREMENTS;

    - CAM should be a good box to box with high stam - he will be up and down a lot with sometimes covering the LWB/LB.

    - Your RCB should be a full back given that he'll be defending the wide positions against wingers.

    - I play a RB at RW - but theres nothing suggesting that you can play a traditional winger or attacker in that role. I like the option of an extra defender in case i need to change formations in game.

    ATTACKING PHASE

    RW/LB 1V1 SITUATION

    The reason I call this formation the full back killer is due to the absurd amount of space the formation creates in between the opponent CB and fullback. Something that people really overlook is how your AI runs affect the opponents AI and because this formation essentially changes from a 433 to a 352, the opponents AI defends for a 433 but takes a while to transition into being programmed to defend a 352. Basically your opponents AI doesn't know who to mark.

    If the conditions are right and your opponent is quite attacking in his play - a lot of the time you can end up with a picture like the above during transition.

    Assuming the ball is won by Mbabu - the interesting thing that occurs is that Lazaro actually runs towards the ball before making the run in behind. It's a weird quirk to this formation and I have no idea why it happens; but the effect of this is that it forces the opponent fullback to absurdly follow Lazaro; creating the aforementioned space between the CB and LB.

    As a result you can;

    1. Play the ball into Lazaro's feet and skill past the full back; leaving a 3v3 situation.
    2. Play the ball into Lazaro and play a one - two with Haaland to circumvent the fullback for a 3v3.
    3. Fake the pass with Lazaro and instead play the ball into the channel for Haaland to receive.

    It's one of the quirks to this formation which I don't know why it happens; to be very honest it could be a exploit to the AI coding, but nevertheless it always leave a potential to attack, no matter how strong your opponent is.

    Obviously this exploit is not guaranteeing a goal - the rest is up to you.

    ATTACKING PHASE

    If the opponent is much more defensive, you'll generally see the situation above. There are a few things to note with the above;

    - Klose, instead of running out wide to the channel as his position would suggest, actually makes a darting effort to come inside; subsequently dragging the fullback with him.

    - Theo hernandez starts making his overlapping run.

    - Muller makes a diagonal run inside from LB/LCM into Central CAm.

    - Haaland shifts from a central striker position to slotting in between the LCB and LB.

    One of the most important thing to note in this formation is the role of the fullback against your wide winger. The majority of the time in defence, my out ball will generally be to mbabu as he's the most in space. This is important because when he's carrying out the ball, there's a few choices for the opponent to make;

    1. He can drag out the RCM to combat Mbabu but would leave a massive gap in the midfield and also expend stamina doing so
    2. He can stick with the running fullback which then would mean there's space to run/pass into Kimmich and Haaland further ahead.
    3. He can rush Kimmich which would leave lazaro free on the wing.
    4. Or finally he can rush Mbabu on the ball but would just leave Kimmich and Lazaro free.

    Whatever choice he makes, there leaves space somewhere, which can be exploited. I like my strikers strong and tall, meaning crosses are key and viable for this phase.

    EXPLOITING THE LEFT HAND SIDE.

    Obviously the situations I've laid out are ideal in theory, but in-game situations can never just work in one or two ways or your opponent will realise what you're doing. What's good about this formation is the fluidity on how you attack and this can be shown in this 3rd example.

    So I've talked already about how this formation exploits the opponent AI's indecisiveness, pulling them out of position and it's the same with this example. Here are the key points;

    1. Muller runs into the central CAM position from being out wide. This is important as he goes from a position where he isn't marked, to a position where someone has to follow his run.
    2. Klose (as mentioned before) makes an inside run from LW to Striker, meaning he drags the RB and CB with him (referencing with how opponent AI's defend a 433 formation)
    3. Theo makes an overlapping run on the outside of the fullback

    What this means is that it cause the opponent to become very narrow, as shown below;

    https://preview.redd.it/jnjmxbydx1171.png?width=481&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb8b485a7289bb02dc92495a335361ee49bbf247

    So what time means is that;

    1. Theo is completely free on the wing - he can either cross or cut back in.
    2. Muller has the opportunity to either run on the outside of the RB or drag the RCM inward which would leave Goretzka a lot of space on the left hand side.

    CONCULSION

    The three attacking scenarios I've listed are generally the ones that i exploit, though obviously it changes from game to game. I've found it a really exciting formation that allows you to be solid defensively without comprimising offense. You'll find that in games you have the opportunity to score even if you're getting outclassed, which probably accounts to why I've done so well this WL.

    I hope this review has helped broaden the perspective on formations - I very rarely play formations now without an 'overload' or 'exploit' somewhere in the formation and it's something that i rarely see done. I still think there is a lot to learn by exploiting the AI, so hopefully this would at least begin the conversation.

    Thanks for taking time to read the ramblings of someone that has a bit too much time and I hope you've learned something along the way.

    If you do try this formation - let me know how you get one!

    Anyone else insanely underwhelmed? Last year we had a 95 promes, 96 ziyech, 94 idrissi, 94 (?) Tadic. This year however, we get a 91 rated koopmeiners as the best card.

    Don't get me wrong, it's a good card, but he was nowhere near the best player in the league. For me it was either Tadic or Berghuis.

    Tadic was the MVP at Ajax, the team that won the league by a huge margin, scoring 14 goals and assisting 18 times. All this in 34 matches.

    Berghuis was the MVP at Feyenoord, scoring 18 and assisting 14, in 31 games.

    These players are 90 rated and 89 rated respectively.

    Antony, the objective card, is a cool card, and I'm definitely going to be completing him as an Ajax fan. However, the rating is just not right. Antony should never have a higher rating than Berghuis.

    One big player is missing, Gravenberch. A 19 year old midfielder that had his breakout season this year. Played the most minutes at Ajax together with Tadic. Gravenberch was one of the most consistent players at Ajax, arguably one of the best midfielders in the league. I'd even say he was better than koopmeiners was. Sure, he could still get an sbc, but I think he should have been in the main team over someone like blind.

    Dumfries getting in the tots is a disgrace in my opinion, had his worst season for psv in 3 years.

    Klaassen at an 87 is also a joke. So important for Ajax on his first season back. Scored 12 goals (which were mostly opening goals) and assisted 3 in 29 games.

    Large post, needed to rant.

    I did the first 8*x pack but I just can't be bothered with the slog... TOTS players have replaced the majority of my good icons, the amount of squad battles and first owner bits here and there just do not appeal to me at all.

    Why not make fun objectives, this just reminds me of those quests in mmos where you have to fetch 200 bone fragments...

    Why are they adding longshot objectives when longshots have become absolutely useless?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 06:08 AM PDT

    Ffs I have been trying to do the longshots objective for barrella and have about 3-10 longshots per game depending on the opponent. All different angles, situations, players (toty messi, tots benzema and I sub them on at ht before anyone moans). Nothing goes in. Only have one from when the opponent took his keeper out to rush my player and I chipped just outside the box.

    Also doesn't help when opponents are up by 4 or more in the 80th minute and play like absolute sweats like their life is on the line holy cow. So far the ones I messaged for doing objectives and they get the win, all mocked me and sent toxic messages back if they beat me...

    Got my first Gold 2 ever! Some tips for all my fellow Gold 3 merchants.

    Posted: 24 May 2021 03:24 AM PDT

    OK so I've been a Gold 3 player for years, basically. I have played FIFA/PES for decades (I'm 34 years old) and had accepted this was just my level. Nowadays I only play WL during TOTS anyway bc I have a young kid and wife that demand attention.

    This weekend, I had some spare time and cruised to Gold 3 (14-7) for once. With the extended WL and a day off I thought: why not go for it? And yay, after some tough games I ended up 17-9! Pretty happy about that and I of course have to tell Reddit bc none of my friends care lol.

    A couple of (maybe not so original) tips that have worked for me:

    1. Try to stay calm at all times and don't put too much pressure on yourself. FIFA = life but in the end it's also just a game. Try to play for fun and enjoy the wins you get, even when the game gives you lemons in other matches. Whatever you get, the rewards will blow anyway.

    2. Don't drink or smoke weed. I know some people enjoy a drink or spliff to take away the stress (I know I did) and I'm sure it works for some, but it does hurt your reaction time and for me also doesn't help me focus for 90 mins. I prefer a cup of tea (coffee adds to the stress).

    3. Turn of the commentary and put on some relaxing/energizing music. WL is stressful especially when the ELO kicks in. The commentary doesn't help as it is just toxic and annoying. I either go with soothing classical music or hardstyle.

    4. Don't ragequit or throw matches. I know some people don't believe the RQ thing but for me it is crystal clear that ELO does not adjust if you RQ games. Also, don't give up when going behind. You'll only improve by playing better players. That being said, I do rubberband when I'm clearly outplayed by someone much better than me.

    5. Spread out your games, take breaks when losing a few in a row and don't play too many games on Friday. Friday in my experience is just a lot harder. I usually just play my first 5 placement games on Friday and leave the rest for Saturday morning/Sunday.

    6. Choose a formation and master it. I know a lot of people use different formations and I do have a defensive formation set to close out games. But for me, it was very important to really get to know one formation and get used to passing patterns etc. I use a 41212(2) and a (similar) 5212, both with fullbacks on balanced and a high defensive line.

    7. Play the way you like. I personally despise vertical nutmegs and I refuse to use them (to each their own though). I enjoy a fast one-two passing game with lots of shot feints. Now I may never get Gold 2 or higher again, but I am having fun and don't rely on broken mechanics that may not be viable in the next FIFA.

    8. Be nice to opponents. Yes, some WL players are incredibly toxic. But I always try to take the high road bc I can't win that toxicity game anyway. I skip all replays and try to focus on my gameplay. Getting angry/worked up only makes me play worse.

    Hope this is somewhat helpful. Last but not least I want to thank this sub for all the great gameplay tips! Have a good one all.

    EDIT: Thanks for the silver! 👍

    My own personal META...

    Posted: 24 May 2021 02:12 PM PDT

    I've tried really hard this FIFA to improve my game and I've definitely succeeded in many ways. I'd hit a plateau though and couldn't break through.

    I got the coins together yesterday to get TOTY Kimmich (am now bankrupt) and abandoned 5-2-1-2 to fit him in (FB Can is a really good CB, btw). I go 4-1-2-1-2 narrow and switch to possession from long ball (tactics were a very slight tweak from NealGuides). And suddenly my game is exactly how I want it. I'm playing my way (switching the ball from side to side, quick movement, pull the opposition out of shape) and the plateau is broken.

    All I can say is, in my case, the META for me is how I want to play. Copying other tactics ain't it. So do your own thing. Play your way. It helps no end.
