How I Elevated My Game from Gold 1 to Elite 3 (for at least a weekend) - WL Review Posted: 20 Jun 2021 04:21 PM PDT (This is going to be a really long post but I think it has great information for someone who well and truly wants to improve.) After Ultimate TOTS, I thought I would be basically done with Ultimate Team for the year, but I realized that I find Weekend League too fun to just stop it altogether. I also really wanted that Elite finish, which I had only achieved once before this weekend, during Community TOTS. It was probably a fluke so I wanted to really earn it this time. (You can skip down below to see my 3 main tips if you aren't concerned about team/formation) Firstly, here is my team (all untradeable) so you can see what I'm working with. https://www.futbin.com/21/squad/8893570 Clearly I have quite a good team, but at an Elite level, it's necessary to realize that the team will not win you games. Amazing players are available for so cheap now that there is no excuse for not being able to create a team that can compete. For example, Flashback Dembele could replace my R9 and there would not be much of a difference (and I truly mean that). I'd say 4 star 4 star minimum is highly recommended for attackers to at least be able to do the croqueta cancel and shoot on both feet. My main tactics are: Press After Possession Loss Width - 4 Depth - 7 Balanced Width - 6 Players in Box - 8 Corners - 4 Free Kicks - 3 My "All Out" tactics (used only after 70th minute if needed) are: Constant Pressure Width - 4 Depth - 7 Fast Build Up Width - 6 Players in Box - 8 Corners - 5 Free Kicks - 3 Relevant instructions are: ST - Get In Behind/Stay Forward CAM - Stay Forward (I also use Conservation Interceptions to save stamina) CDM - Stay Back, Cut Passing Lanes, Cover Center LB/RB - Balanced Attack, Overlap The way I play this formation HEAVILY relies on players with high stamina in defense and midfield because of how often the players rotate into each others' positions. For example, because I play up so high with my fullbacks, it is very common for Kimmich/Essien/Fernandes to take the spot of the fullback while defending the counter attack. In fact, the fullbacks run so much that I have to sub both Davies and Cancelo off for Verratti and Vazquez around the 70th minute usually. Not having the fullbacks up the field can be a wasted opportunity, especially if the opponent is playing narrow (however, there are times where the opponent abuses the wings so much that I switch one fullback to Stay Back While Attacking). Also if I need an extra boost in midfield late in the game, Renato comes on for either Essien or Kimmich, whoever is more tired. Now for the main tips 1 - Drink Water Alright I'm joking with this one I'm actually going to give you real tips. However, playing with the level of focus required will likely cause you to tense up so I think a really hard stress ball is nice to have to let out all the tension after a difficult game. 1 - Mentality Mentality is the biggest hurdle in my opinion. Take some solace in knowing that if you are Gold 1, you likely have the mechanics to beat any other player that you'll face in Weekend League. You can no longer look at the squad screen and give up inside because your opponent has an insane team. You can no longer look up your opponent's gamertag on Futwiz and say "oh, he's a Top 1000 player... it's ok if I lose this one." This creates situations where you go into the game with a half-hearted effort and basically concede the game from the first minute. Realize this: challenging games are where you LEARN. Do your best to focus hard on your play (important attacking and defending tips will be below). You CAN beat a great opponent if you have the skill to hit Gold 1. When you concede, you can't say "that directional nutmeg is broken, that's unfair" because you and I both know that you can defend it if you are spaced properly to avoid the frozen defender animation. If you ever blame your keeper (unless he gets stuck behind the goalpost or something), you need to cut that out. You know you shouldn't have let your opponent get a good shot off. It's this mentality that changes so much. It opens you up to learning during and after the game by rewatching your opponent's goals. In fact, I learned a new move by watching a goal from a 24-2 player who beat me. If you don't watch these replays and find out how you could have stopped the goal, you're stunting your growth. 2 - Defending The jump from Gold 1 to Elite in terms of defending is huge, much bigger than the jump in attacking I'd say. If you are a Gold 1 player, you might think that your defending is great and can't be improved much, but you may need to reconsider it. I think many Gold 1 players like myself get stuck because they don't play enough challenging opponents. The weekend starts really easily against opponents who will never beat you in a million years, so we compensate by defending lazily against them. However, you should be using these games to practice your defending for when you'll need it later. So how exactly can defending be improved at this level? You need to become best friends with the Right Stick and Right Trigger, because you need to use them about 50% more than you used to. When you opponent starts an attack, you need to be 2 steps ahead of him. Consider the player on the ball and which of his teammates are open (or will be open). If you were attacking, who would you try to pass to? Cover him. Ok, if he is covered, what would your next option be? Cover him. Do this until the end of time. Trust me, it is exhausting for you mentally to play like this, but this is how you make your opponent uncomfortable and create counter attacking opportunities. I used to pretty much stick to one defender for extended periods of time, but your opponent will recognize this and play away from him. If you're switching players a lot, they will need to focus more and find much better passes. In addition to all that, you need to track every run in behind. In Elite, you cannot be making excuses for allowing someone to run in behind and score or, perhaps less obviously, run in behind on the wings and cross it in to score. I used to ignore the runs on the wing and concede a lot because of it. Now, I can intercept most wing passes or at least be in position to pressure and force it backwards. Through balls past the CBs should be intercepted nearly every time. Lastly, one area that I used to struggle in was when the opponent had the ball along the byline. It is not enough to pressure the ball. If you do this, your AI defenders in the middle will commit some tomfoolery and allow an easy pass in for the score. Keep switching between the man pressuring the ball and defenders in the middle to pick off the inevitable pass. If you master all of this, you will dominate worse opponents so much that it will feel really sweaty and you'll probably receive some angry messages. It also comes with the benefit of getting more rage quit wins as your opponent feels helpless in attack. 3 - Attacking So, if Elite players have this defending mastered like above, how do we beat them? Well, as stated before, this type of defending requires an almost ridiculous amount of focus. If you don't feel at least a little physically drained during the game, you're probably not defending well enough to be Elite. In order to beat Gold 1+ opponents, you NEED to be patient in attack. No more lazy through balls that you know are unlikely to connect. No more lazy passes in general. If you're in the box but you know too many players are in the way, pass it back out. I've had attacks this weekend where I had to string together at LEAST 30 passes, but it resulted in a goal because it drains your opponent. Having fullbacks in the attack is really beneficial for this because you can pull their midfielders wide and create space. There will ALWAYS be an open man if you are playing the ball into good positions. So why would you try a shot directly into a defender when you can pass it out and try again? You might as well, because the more you pass, the more their stamina and focus is drained. There will be a time to strike even if it takes ages. One thing that helped me was calling myself out after making a lazy pass that got intercepted. It helps you remember the next time you intercept that you need to be more careful. Contrary to popular belief, 5 star skills don't seem extremely prevalent, or at least this has been my case all year against better opponents. The best moves are the croqueta cancel for a quick turn and of course the directional nutmeg when you have the angle. Most of the best players will be able to defend the nutmeg though. I only conceded once to that move all weekend. End If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them. TL;DR - The things that separate Gold 1 from Elite 3 are: Elite players stop blaming the game and learn how to defend that "BS" goal they conceded. Elite players defend aggressively and think alongside the opponent to know where to pressure or intercept passes. Elite players aren't lazy in attack and always make the easy pass. Maradona SBC is EA Ultimate Testimony how little they repsect their playerbase. Posted: 20 Jun 2021 10:36 AM PDT Middle of June, EA would rather force you to stop playing than give you top tier card in SBC that you can grind towards, instead they do their best attempt to make you believe you're getting a top tier card: 3 weak foot, 80 stamina, cost your kidney, and 3x 89 rated squad not giving out 125k or 100k or even 50k pack is a cherry on top. There is also a PR value for them, oh EA so nice, they let us get Diego in his memory. Personally I'll skip next FIFA, the servers, skill moves cancel that that makes this game look like button mash fighing game instead of football game and all those shady content behaviors that are so clear and obvious are too much. Henry is the absolute slowest 90+ paced player in Fifa history Posted: 20 Jun 2021 02:04 PM PDT I made this exact thread back in fifa 18 when I got his loan and I'm glad nothing has changed in 4 Fifa's, well done EA It can't even be just about the body type either seeing Cantona has the same one but he can still move around freely, even Rebic Edouard and Inaki feel fast af. They've really done this on purpose it seems [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 10:41 AM PDT He's one of the best CAMs I've ever used. Pacy, pass master with a powerful finesse shot. Even tracks back, tackles the ball off opponents and starts counters. For the first time in FUT, my cam's goal contributions per game stats is up there with that of forwards. [link] [comments] |

Might have been my most satisfying play this year :D Posted: 20 Jun 2021 10:57 AM PDT |
Posted: 20 Jun 2021 06:07 AM PDT I know this may be obvious to most but to those who it isn't this has helped me. Firstly, pressing a player doesn't mean running to him and challenging. It's constantly closing down quickly, nicking it and moving back in position quickly if you can't, you are just pressuring them in the hope they make a mistake/bad touch. Do not challenge for every ball, you will get picked apart easily. Another thing is, if you are unsuccessful in the man to man press, mark the space they are looking to pass into. It will result in a poorly hit pass or a rushed change of mind, it's alot less risky and you are not leaving holes. Do not follow a player, do not chase, protect your centre, that is obvious, never pull your CB out even if he's the last man. You have more chance of them overthinking and missing if you stay in the centre and they have options. Run out to the wing and they have open space in the centre for a simple goal Remember the hardest thing about FIFA and the thing that sets people apart in real life sport is mentality. You have to keep your concentration for nearly 15 minutes, it is not easy and mistakes are made. It is not always the game, it is a lot of the time bad football. I see a lot of people say you can't pay realistic, I think you can, I have no idea how to do skill moves or any other tricks, I play the same way I have for 20+ years, the way I like football to be played at the time. Sticking to the mentality topic, admit you are playing this game to win and do the best you can, yeah it's for fun but you want to win. There is no shame in that, wear your badge of competitiveness with honour, this is one of the few arenas for normal people to compete with other people. You will get your Diego Costa's ( specific celebration watchers ) trying to get in your head and you just have to think how would I get to Diego Costa, do the same thing back! We all want to win or we'd stick to friendlies. My tactics right now are crazy, my own style of pure football. Everyone is on attack and I mean everyone, I play a high line and camp out in the opponents half with a fast build up. It test my defensive skill massively but it is the only thing that improves it whilst keeping the game fun. Edit: just some advice after a friend played same console co-op with me and he kept making the same errors. He got me relegated a few divisions with obvious errors, no biggy, we still had a laugh but for when you are playing alone and competitively some helpful tips. Edit 2: Also stop sprinting for everything, sprint when you are trying to get away on a clear run or chasing, that's it. In the attacking third you will keep losing the ball near the box or when CM runs onto it because of the heavy touch. Especially when you are running into the box, you will run into the defender, over and over again. He kept blaming FIFA mechanics but it deffo wasn't that. Edit 3: if you must pull your CB out, practice moving a player into the hole behind quickly before you plan to move out with or very quickly be prepared to switch (use the stick not L1) to a man who will run in behind to protect the hold or as soon you can see you may be exposed bring your keeper out to close the space and whilst you bring your keeper take someone onto the line to protect the goal ( this is easy, use triangle so you can still use the sticks to move other players ) [link] [comments] |
