/r/FIFA: The Weekly Fucking Rant Thread

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 04:00 AM PDT

As we all know, there is a lot of anger to be had in FIFA. Many controllers have lost their lives in the 90th minute. Some call it handicap. Some call it scripting. Sometimes it's just the general online bullshit that send you into a rage. This is our weekly support group -- where we come to vent and rant against all the things that shouldn't matter, except they do!

    Give in to your anger...

Let the hate flow through you...

What's pissing you off the most in this game we love to hate?

FOF PTG Upgrade schedule tanks alot of the excitement for me

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:15 AM PDT

Eas schedule to only upgrade them once per week really hinders my excitement for these cards. One upgrade every week is far to little for tournaments that dont even last one month.

We're now still waiting for the upgrades for Italy (Verratti and Florenzi) and Spain (Llorente and Morata), which play today. Therefore atleast one of them will get a double upgrade guaranteed.

Same goes for England (Foden, Grealish and Chilwell) or Denmark (Eriksen) and Argentinia (Acuna, Paredes) who also will get double upgrades if the continue in the tournaments.

The situation for Brazil (Vinicius, Firmino and Eder Militao) is even worse, they are both waiting for their double upgrades.

Its just frustrating having a card in you club that should already be better but due to eas laziness we can wait as long as a week (Italy game against Belgium last friday) for their deserved upgrades.

Fifa problem : High level players

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:21 AM PDT

I'm not a high level player. I range at around 2k SR and Gold 2-1 in WL. I play as a casual with a Chelsea past and present team.

When I play division rivals, I am often matched with ~2.4K players. I think they are the high level players. The problem is, none of them are playing football. They are playing a mix of glitchy fifa street and ping pong. But when you defend with Rudiger and Christensen against 97 Mbappe or Prime Cruyff, the ball never bounce in your favor.

This is what I think is the problem with this game. To be a very good player, you need to play in a way that isn't football anymore. You need to perform lots of unrealistic skill moves in a row and with op players that cost 7M to be sure that the ball bounces back in your feet.

Fifa should comme closer to real football. In the whole euro tournament, I saw less skill moves than in one single half against a 2.4K SR opponent. Skill moves is like salt, having none and there's a lack of taste, but having too much makes it that you can't eat.

This is not a rant against players playing this way, as they are forced by fifa to play like this in order to win.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:55 PM PDT

...and with a single driven through-ball to an off-screen player, your opponent is through and scores with a near-post or cross-goal strike. It doesn't really matter where you put it with the quality of the players we have now, does it?

The most common formation employed by people playing in D1 these days is a 7-3, an 8-2, or occasionally a 6-4. Almost nobody has a true midfield, because there's apparently no need for one.

"If it's in the game, it's in the game", we were once told by the original EA Sports slogan. But I see very little football in FIFA 21. If anything, it's closer to an NHL game, but without the equivalent of an "icing" rule that might address the relentless long-ball play.

Sixty seconds of good attacking play in your opponent's half is often worth less than a fraction of a second pressing two controller inputs at once for a magic pass, or Street Fighter-style combos that might confer the invincibility frames required for a player to run straight through opponents.

This just isn't football. It's not even close. What the hell are we playing?

When I Get Older, I Will Be Stronger (African WL Recap)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:26 PM PDT

Time to have fun (and I use that term loosely) with FIFA WL and this time, I revisit a project I started back in January when I first got this game. An all-African team. Previously, I used separate nations, this time I put it all together. When viewing my starting XI, some names may surprise you (given you don't know the backstory) but it will be made clear. So let us begin.

    1. STARTING XI AND BENCH

    They'll Call Me Freedom

    and the bench

    Just Like A Waivin' Flag

A majority of the team is self-explanatory. However, for those who are unaware:

    Desailly (Ghana)

    Makelele (DR Congo [then Zaire]

    Vieira (Senegal)

    Eusebio (Mozambique).

Also before one asks "Where's Tapsoba or Silas or whatever " REAL FACES ONLY. Now for the tactics

Defense: Pressure on Heavy Touch W4/D5

Offense: Possession W7/Players in Box 7

    Onana: Come for Crosses

    Aurier: Stay Back/Overlap

Masuaku (actually Hakimi): Join the Attack/Overlap

    Makelele: Man Mark/Stay Back/Cover Center

    Essien: Stay on the Edge

Vieira: Get Forward/Get into the Box/Free Roam

Okocha: Get into the Box/Free Roam

    Eusebio: Stay Central/Target Man/Stay Forward

    Eto'o: Drift Wide/Get in Behind/Stay Forward

    As for the backup plans:

Plan B a.k.a the plan that actually worked most of the time

    and…..

Plan C a.k.a probably the most ineffective formation I've used

    2. The Weekend (a.k.a. ETO'O KILLS EVERYTHING BUT THE SERVERS NEARLY KILL ME)

Man, I will NEVER do WL on a Monday again

So my plan was simple: BULLY THE HELL OUT OF YOU WITH MY MIDFIELD, and get the ball to the front three. So let's see how that worked:

    a. Saturday - (5-5) Started pretty well considering my first 10 usually has me in the negative. Losses were tight while wins were big (mainly RQs)

    b. Sunday - (6-4; 11-9 overall) Another good day. Ended at +2 but it really should have been +3. Thinking I'm on my way to a comfortable G3, maybe even G2

    c. Monday - (3-6) Straight Hell! PS5 servers were awful. Honestly, the only reason I got G3 was because of 2 RQs along with the one other win I got. I was about to stop but pushed through.

    3. Stats and Reviews

Andre Onana - 6.5/10 (Again it's hard to gauge keepers in this game because even Icon keepers won't do right at times but considering the stage of the game he performed alright)

IF Serge Aurier - 7.5/10 (Keeping him on Stay Back worked wonders because he was pacy enough to hold up counters and dispossess attackers as well

Prime Marcel Desailly - 8/10 (A rock in that back line. Was enough to stop attacks dead. Could get in front of shots for autoblocks)

RTTF Kalidou Koulibaly - 8/10; 1 G/1 MOTM (Copy and paste everything from Desailly except he was the more aggressive CB often getting forward and winning balls)

Arthur Masuaku - 6.5/10; 2 A (Was not in the game long but did some good before his exit, as evidenced by his 2 assists. Could defend well too)

PIM Claude Makelele - 7/10; 3 A/2 MOTM (Very strong in the tackles, but at times midfielders could get by him with little issue. Intercepted balls very well)

Prime Michael Essien - 7/10; 5 G/2 A/2 MOTM (Was somewhat underwhelmed with him but still can tackle and get forward when needed. Found himself in scoring opportunities which he took)

Prime Patrick Vieira - 9/10; 4 G/7 A/2 MOTM (Still the man in midfield. Wins everything. Gets up and down the pitch with ease. And a decent shooter to boot)

PIM Jay-Jay Okocha - 8.5/10; 15 G/8 A/2 MOTM (If it wasn't for that stamina, he'd be broken. Floats around the box, can always find the right pass. Also, he is a free-kick god)

Mid Eusebio - 9/10; 20 G/17 A/6 MOTM (Again, that damn stamina, and the fact I couldn't get his Base or Prime. But, good Lord, what a card. Usually, I would just shoot to just see what happens thinking "Let me try to get something out of nothing" and it usually ended with "WAIT THAT WORKED?!"

Prime Samuel Eto'o - 10/10; 22 G/16 A/13 MOTM (This card is crack cocaine and I am addicted. Probably the best card I have used all year, even better than Vieira. The most assured goal scorer I have I seen. I LOVE THIS CARD. If only his price didn't tank while I was using him)

Prime Didier Drogba - 8/10; 4 G/3 A (Came on for Eusebio. Hold up play was good and could still get behind defenders, while not as effectively as Eusebio.)

TOTS Ismailia Sarr - 7/10; 2 G (Came on in the 3-5-2 system. Able to torch defenders and get into attacking positions)

OTW Achraf Hakimi - 8/10; 1 G/1 A (The REAL starting LB. Could easily get up and down the pitch. Defensiveply strong but much more effective in attack.)

Birthday Eric Bailly - 7/10 (One game cameo for when Koulibaly got carded. Came on and performed well and able to keep some shots from reaching Onana)

Birthday Geoffrey Kondogbia - 7/10 (Came on when I was trying to see a game out. Again, a strong midfielder who played decently in dying moments)

    4. Verdict and next Team

Aside from the 4-2-2-2 formation, this team performed well. Particularly the spine of the CBs, Vieira and Eto'o were god-tier. Another Gold 3 finish is always great. I may or may not not skip this WL given the PTSD of this past weekend, also the Euros/Copa/ and the Gold Cup eventually. However, EA threw out another themed WL with Spain, so I may do that. I'll figure it out eventually.

    Until next time….

It's geniuenly so annoying to see the TOTW/TOTS req on EVERY SBC while both of these types are not even packs. It's just another squad you have to make just to do an SBC that's not worth it cause of that requirement. It's July I just don't see why they are being so strict even now...

I see a few people are struggling with extra time bs but there is a trick

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Not sure how many people are aware of it but all you need to do is to get the ball out of play. Let's say ref added 1min extra time. Once the timer runs out, do not commence a new attack. All you need to do is to blast it over the sideline and the game will be finished without giving your opponent a new opportunity.

    First Fifa since 1998ish - Top 200 PC WL/FIFA Review/journey.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:23 PM PDT

So I know it's july and apparently nobody plays this game anymore but this still feels like a big achievement to me! So this is my WL / FIFA review.

First thing to clear up! This is my first fifa since around 1998 (i'm old 30+). I've made previous reddit posts regarding my journey. The below thread is me asking about my first ever WL and what expectations i should have:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/FIFA/comments/jp50zx/about_to_play_my_first_ever_weekend_league/

and then this post when i first hit elite

    https://www.reddit.com/r/FIFA/comments/lxq1qx/first_fifa_since_1998_my_fut_review/

This i guess might be the final one of these as i've probably peaked !

    Imgur of top 100: https://imgur.com/a/xwy8wtT

    Games review for this WL:

I won my first 10 games quite efficiently, had a blip at 10-0 vs a decent player but i was messing around too much with my formation which put me 3-1 down in the first half. I clawed it back to 3-3 before conceding a goal from my own error and losing 4-3.

I quickly got up to 20-2 losing vs a couple of decent players (one ended top 30) and after i missed a few chances he went 1-0 up and as i threw more players forward late he extended the lead. Fair play to him.

The second loss was a stupid game. I think he scored a free kick, a bounce back and a nice through ball goal which i should have tracked. I was 4-3 or 3-2 down in the 80th min and then i got a DC (no idea why as the server let me straight back in) but it gave me the deserved loss. At the end of sunday i was 26-3 with 1 game left.

I was already top 200 and wasn't planning to play on monday as i was busy. Late on evening i thought fuck it, and decided to search a game. After 15 mins of having people leave at the setup screen ("player has left the game message") i was getting bored searching. I played a Div rivals game to complete my 92+ icon swap (7 tokens) and then decided to que again. I matched a guy with a pretty average team (91 rated) with a couple of the new FOF player SBCs playing a 4-2-4 setup. I thought this looks winable and then the game started. About 2 seconds the game lags hard and i get a disconnect message pop up. He was a DC hacker (i've seen vids on this reddit of it) and at 0-0 he DC'ed me giving me the loss. I end 26-4. On the plus my 92+ pack as PIM Maradona.

    Tactics and other helpful bits:

Formations: I have 3 different formations as i do think some formations do give you a natural advantage over others. I previously said i played 3-5-2 in my elite review but it had clear weaknesses vs some formations (I found vs 4-4-2 to be really difficult). I've listed the formations i use below and give reasons. All of them use 7 depth for defense and an average width. The rest i don't think matters to much but switch between long ball, fast build up and balanced to find what fits your playstyle.I also think you need to have a gameplan vs each "meta" formation as people often have 1 of these.

442(2) - My new main formation. I saw a vid with hashtag tom using it and after learning it I think it's the most balanced formation in the game. Against other 4-4-2 formations it's an even match up. I like being able to call both strikers back to defend (down and up on the dpad) to really press other 442's. I will use it vs 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-2-1-2 and attack down the wings most of the game. as there is space out there. I find this formation does struggle sometimes vs a 5 back and any formation with 3 in midfield unless you pull your wide players into midfield to cover and you can get overloaded on the sides (espc when they play fast build up).

451 - This is my "anti-meta" formation. I'll use this if i want a tight game where i have a tactical edge. This works great against the 4-1-2-1-2 as the whole idea of that formation is that you attack through the middle. This matches the middle and gives you two wingers to overload either side. My middle CM of the 3 is normally on stay back to mark the CAM vs 41212. I also use this vs 5-3-2 as again i match the midfield 3 and overload the wings. This is great vs the 532 because there will be times you win the ball back and you have a 3v3 match vs the backline (RM-ST-LM vs 3 CB). You need a 5* skiller up front though. I find with this formation when i beat the midfield whoever of the 3 CMs is free can then act as a striker and push into the box.

352 - I can't add much here. I rarely use it but essentially it's my "i need a goal" formation. I flood the box with players and try to get a break. Sometimes i'll use it to match up vs other 352's and 532s depending on how the game is going.

    Skill moves / Tools:

These are some of the things i use consistently to create chances and might be helpful for people.

    1. Right Bumper - Call a player back. - this is huge for me. Really good to ensure when you ping a ball to a winger he gets it, you can call him back so even if they have it on team press you beat them to the ball as your also going to the passed ball. I think this is not used or highlighted enough.
    2. Creative runs - I need to use these more, but sending your RM or LM into the center of the box in a creative run can really open up space in the box. Simply pass to your LM/RM and then LB pass pack and flick the right stick in the direction of the box. You now will have a potential overload in the box.
    3. Skill moves - learn all the main ones in everybody's "OP" skills move guide. My most used are probably the following. 1. Ball roll (used all over the pitch) 2. Directional nutmeg (used in most places to create space) 3. La croqueta or elastico (used in the box). 4. either the mcgeedy cancel
    4. Pass type - Double A, Double Y passes are great in certain situations to work a ball into a tight area. if you don't use these try them :)

    My team: https://www.futbin.com/21/squad/9079241

I start arthur for the chem instead of de jong and then sub in de jong. otherwise i line up like the picture. I often sub out essien and bring on atal or wijnaldum depending on how the game is going. I also think part of the reason i've jumped in rating is because over the last two weeks i've packed both red neymar and ronaldo which in close games often means my players finish the chances i create. (p2w!)

I also think having a mix of High/High and Medium / High midfielders really helps your team. I want all my midfielders to track back so i wouldn't for example use dembele now over atal for the RM slot because i feel atal offers me more going forward and backwards. (If i get better i may consider using more attacking RM's like the pros!)

Mentality - I think mentality is a huge item in FIFA. this was the first week i actually stuck to a plan and played 5, stopped for an hour (once i got to higher elo). I think this helped focus for each game as the higher ELO games are often decided on who makes a mistake first.

I also think a lot of people think the game is rigged against you but that is simply not true and it's a self defeating mentality. If you assume you will get scored against on kick off you will more like make rash choices, panic and then concede the kick off goal.

ps. some of my thoughts might change and i am defiantly NOT the best fifa player, not even close. I doubt i would get even close to top 200 on xbox or PS so i still have a lot to learn.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:32 PM PDT

I dunno about y'all but the Schick SBC Card has been terrible for me yet. In most games he has been almost invisible for me and i didnt notice any shots or good runs by him. As soon as i subbed him off my team was doing waaaay better. Maybe i'm alone with this but please tell me your experience with his card😅

    How EA coded missed/intercepted passes

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:19 AM PDT

I probably must start the discussion saying that I could be wrong in what I'm saying, that's mostly my impression from maaaany matches played and many replay reviewed.

What I love ( /s ) about how EA coded a pass that is bad aimed or going to be intercepted is that it's not anything close to the real life.

When we aim and press for a pass or a through ball the game simply decides if that ball is going to reach the desidered player or not:

    • if the player is going to receive the ball (and sometimes doesn't even care if he's marked or not) then the direction and power will send the ball in a direction where no opponent player can steal the ball;
    • if the player is not going to receive the ball then the direction and power are changed to reach the opponent player, like your intention was to pass the ball to him instead of your actual player.

Just try to watch closely this kind of actions, where you know that you correctly aimed a pass but it goes directly at the opponent, what is absolutly fantastic ( /s ) is that, watching even closely the action, it's easily noticeble how that ball, if there wasn't an opponent player in that direction, still couldn't even reach your own player...

I mean, in a real life scenario a player decides who's going to receive the ball and then tries to pass it in that direction, if he's capable of performing such pass then it's going to reach where he aimed, if he misses the pass then it will go in a different direction (maybe a little wider then requested) but not directly to the opponent team...

This year passing is just a mess (through balls on top of all) but this is probably what makes me laugh the most...

Sorry if it's not 100% clear, this is not my first language and it's not so simple to explain something with full details :D
