There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that a skill move should take out a defender that I am manually controlling if I myself are not faked by it

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:19 PM PST

Skill moves like the bridge or directional nutmeg that trigger an auto-lunge animation should not work if I'm controlling the defender. I'm all for this happening against AI controlled defenders, as it punishes people for using the CPU to defend.

It's unacceptable that I am forced into being beat by a player when his SM did not work on me. If I don't hit tackle, or go the wrong way, I shouldn't be screwed over by an animation. That's part of what makes skill moves so broken, they trigger movements and dive-ins on manually controlled defenders, AND give you a speed boost when doing them.

Enjoyment... Or Simply Time? What REALLY keeps us playing FIFA?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:26 PM PST

A comment from a fellow subscriber really hit home... Yesterday someone was commenting on the new match limits in some of the Icon Swaps friendlies and they astutely observed that EA had picked up on a situation. The situation is that players are playing golden goal / sudden death to get the Swaps. EA Sports has decided to react with measures to end this phenomenon, essentially putting players in a position where they will have to spend even more time playing. The original poster commented that rather than ask WHY are people avoiding playing, EA has reacted by simply taking more of people's time.

If they were to ask why, the answer would be that a massive number of players simply do not enjoy playing this game. We could go into the reasons, but there are many and they would probably take up an entire subreddit. From scripting to horrible AI to unforgivable glitches, we can focus just on the basic fact that doing well in the game requires exorbitant and frankly unhealthy amounts of time dedicated to it. The only other option is spending exorbitant and economically unhealthy amounts of money trying to get decent players in packs. Of course, consumers and players have no guarantee whatsoever that these packs are fairly administrated, and not rigged or gamed by EA using algorithms and behavioral data to influence us to spend more.

While I have not spend money on FIFA 21, I've spent much too much time. After reading that comment, it got me right in the gut, and I couldn't even bring myself to finish Weekend League. It causes me stress just to think about. And that stress, I believe, is connected to EA's prime objectives: to trap people into a vicious, rigged, and parasitic cycle of spending more and more time playing FIFA 21. Their ultimate objective might be to simply foment spending, or it could be to gain more data on what is addictive and most time-consuming, with an eventual goal of finding ways to monetize consumers in new ways.

So tonight, I feel like I am done giving my time to a company that keeps us coming back not for the pleasure, but rather keeps us on the belief that the game (or our luck) might get better. Our lives are too short to not follow one of the most basic human principles: to find authentic pleasure in what we do, and to live free from the restraints of any sort of tyranny.

    Modern 4231/325 Tactic Guide

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:22 PM PST

After weeks of experimenting, I have finally create a tactic I'm extremely happy with.

In attack, it creates a 325 shape (sometimes even 316) and overloads opponents. We defend as a 4411 and defensively it is extremely solid.

    The Tactic

4231 narrow (with the LAM and RAM)

    • Press after possession loss
    • 5 defensive width
    • 10 depth
    • Balanced
    • 5 width
    • 5 players in box

    Player Instructions

    • ST - get in behind
    • LAM - free roam, get into box
    • CAM - free roam
    • RAM - drift wide, get into box
    • LDM - stay back
    • RDM - get forward, cover centre
    • RB - stay back
    • LB - get forward, overlap

Note: If you want your RB to be the attacking player, simply switch the instructions for the LB/RB, LDM/RDM and LAM/RAM.

    How it Works

This is a nothing like the dull, formulaic 4231's you often see online - sitting deep with both fullbacks staying back, waiting for an opponent mistake. It is a 4231 in name and defensive shape only.

When attacking, the left back pushes up into the wing position. The LAM drifts inside, almost like a LCM. A diamond is frequently created between the LDM, RDM, LAM and CAM.

The RAM stays wide and provides width on the right. The shape is almost a 3-diamond-3 or 325.

Sometimes I feel like I have 7 players in midfield, all positioned on a different vertical and horizontal line, giving me lots of passing options.

I'm able to counter attack with the striker or right winger. The overlapping left back is racking up the assists. Opponents simply can't cope.

It reminds me of Brazil's tactic from around ten years ago (but mirrored): https://i.ibb.co/N992KZg/brazil3.jpg

Not quite 4231, not quite a 442 diamond.

I use 10 depth because I want to compress the space between my defence and midfield. If you want to use a lower depth, by all means do so. I've tried using lower depths but I find I concede more goals*,* because my opponents have more space in front of my defence. Of course, they will try to play through balls in behind. If you see their striker making a run in behind, switch to the nearest centreback and track the run.

Why it Works - The Theory

I did not create this tactic out of thin air. It's based on the attacking shape that I see a lot top coaches try to create: 325 (or 3241).

Three players in defence, two in midfield, two out wide stretching the play, two attacking midfielders in the half-spaces and a striker up front.

There's an excellent YouTube video by ex-Chelsea and England coach, Steve Holland, explaining how Chelsea (under Conte), Man City (under Pep) and Liverpool (under Klopp) utilise this attacking shape in different ways. I am unable to include links to YouTube videos to this post, but it can easily be found by searching YouTube for: "Steve Holland: Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool attacking with a front five – Masterclass".

If diagrams float your boat, these show how Pep has utilised this shape at Barcelona and Bayern Munich:

    Player Archetypes

    • ST - Ideally someone quick and strong with at least 4* weak foot. Having a player who can win aerial balls is a big plus (E.g. Morata, Mane, Lautaro Martinez), as it makes it easier to beat opponents who use Constant Pressure.
    • LAM - I've had success with both left and right-footers here. This player will drop deep, help build attacks, run into the left half-space and score goals. Needs decent speed, dribbling, passing, shooting. E.g. Mkhitaryan headliners, Dybala, Bamba, Lemar.
    • CAM - E.g. Messi, Felix.
    • RAM - A right-footed winger. E.g. Carrasco, Lozano.
    • LDM - A defensively solid deep-lying playmaker. A left-footer here can be beneficial, as he will have to cover the space vacated by the LB occasionally. E.g. Frenkie De Jong, Verratti, Partey, Matuidi. M/H workrates ideally.
    • RDM - Box-to-box midfielder. E.g. Capa, Llorente, Valverde. H/H workrates.
    • RB - Currently using Ansaldi. A fullback with good physicality. A fullback/centre back hybrid.
    • LB - Use Acuña if you have him. This will be your left-sided Dani Alves, getting up and down all game. Other options: Alba, Grimaldo, Kostic.
    • CB - Left-footer at LCB, right-footer at RCB ideally. Quick, strong players with decent passing. Akanji RTTF and Delaney IF are an excellent partnership for me.

    Conclusion

I urge you to give this tactic a try if you like fast, free-flowing football! Put your 4231 prejudices aside and make FIFA great again!

A free kick I scored in Weekend league.

I hate the butt clenching mechanic that EA has implemented for the final minutes of the game.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:11 AM PST

Every player forgets how to play football, its a battle to keep everyone in check so you don't accidentally let Timo Werner slot one in your backside for the 5th time in a row.

Its as if my opponent is being held hostage behind the monitor, and this win means that he will get to eat his flaming hot cheetos before he ultimately succumbs to his fate.

Referees forget what offside is, the linesman has already retired and is now sat having a poo in the dressing room. whilst all this pandemonium is going on Lee Dixon is having a field day.

    EA pls.

The bridge is the most overpowered, unrealistic, disgusting mechanic in this game right now

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:27 PM PST

They really need to do something about this. I'm an E3/E2 player and literally everyone at +15 or above ELO abuses this mechanic AGAIN AND AGAIN. I cant even count the number of shit goals I've conceded because of this one stupid skill move.

Its honestly just disgusting the amount of tackle backs it causes and how it makes your 90 pace defenders useless.

To anyone that abuses this mechanic constantly game after game: please find another game to play you are ruining everyones experience using this shit.

This is a real problem because your defence literally becomes useless its practically impossible to stop and i wouldnt say that about the croqueta, elastico etc etc. Worst part is this doesn't even take any skill its just bloody broken

Please stop using it if you do lets end this shit
